SCC Divisional XC Meets Hosted at Hamden Town CenterPublished by
By Special Correspondent Ellis Gill, Editing by Ron Knapp The SCC Divisional championships held on Monday at the Hamden Middle School in the center of town featured two races per gender over the same 3 mile course but the competition was separated into four competitions. Girls Divisional Hammonasset/Quinnipiac The meet started off with the combined division race between the Hammonasset and Quinnipiac divisions. Daniel Hand senior star Annecy Vlieks left no doubts about her recent injury recovery, as she led the race wire to wire. She had a commanding lead the entire race, finishing the three mile course in 18:04. Hand finished third overall in the combined race, and second place for their division. Sarah Roberts of Mercy also had a strong day. She was runner-up in the race, finishing with a time of 19:00. While Mercy was second overall in the combined race, they did win the Quinnipiac division for the third straight year. With Thetford Invitational this weekend, Mercy decided to run a split team, and held out some of their top runners to rest for a busy upcoming weekend. Mackenzie Spooner of Sacred Heart Academy took third overall in the race, running an impressive 19:27, just edging out Olivia Jackson of Guilford who ran 19:32. Sally Banks of SHA rounded out the top 5 of the combined race. Guilford took the overall win in the combined race, and also won the Hammonasset division over Hand. The Grizzlies placed their first four runners in the top ten of the race, and won the combined race with a score of 48 points. Housatonic/Oronoque In the other combined division race, the teams in the Housatonic and Oronoque divisions toed the start line. Claire Theiss of Amity was the overall winner, running a speedy 18:50 on the three mile course. Not far behind was division rival Emily D’Souza of Cheshire. Rounding out the top five was Stephanie Sandborn of Shelton who ran 19:24, and Harper Vanacore of Sheehan, the early pace setter, ran 19:35. For the Oronoque division, Wilbur Cross was the division champion, just edging out North Haven by a score of 25-30. Kendall Montabana was the individual division champ, finishing in 19:49. Boys Divisional Races: Hammonasset/Quinnipiac On the boys side, Hamden senior star Alexander Medina was the combined race champion. Alexander looked extremely strong from start to finish, coming through the finish with an impressive time of 15:49 on the three mile course. Fellow Hamden teammate Zayd Vohra took runner-up in the race, running 16:11, and more importantly holding off the pack of X-men jerseys behind him. Xavier took the team victory on the day for the combined race, as well as the Quinnipiac division. Xavier’s depth was on full display, as they placed four in the top nine of the race.
