In a special feature after an exciting outdoor season that saw nine state records rewritten and before we take a summer hiatus from constant activity, MySportsResults presents a review of the latest Connecticut and CIAC Open and Class Meet records from the 2025 outdoor season. We hope you enjoy reviewing the latest updates to each meet record noted below that includes photos of the athletes from MSR and coaches.

Boy’s State Records

2000m Steeplechase

Three, two, one. Those are Soheib Dissa’s finishes the last three years in the 2000m steeplechase at New Balance Nationals Outdoor in Philadelphia. After coming close the past two years, the Newtown senior finally came away with a national title and the emotions were evident as he raised his arms and pumped his fist twice in the last 100m. He may have just missed the meet record by about a half of a second but he ran the fastest time in the nation and crushed his own state record with a time of 5:43.98. His performance is also the 4th fastest time in US high school history, only three seconds more than Nathan Mountain’s national record of 5:40.72.

1-Mile

Prior to his winning performance at NBNO, Soheib Dissa elected to bypass competition in the CIAC Class L meet to race against the nation’s best at the HOKA Festival of Miles at St. Louis University HS in Missouri on June 5th. His performance in the second tiered High School Elite 1-Mile race not only netted him a personal record but a new state record as he finished third in a time of 4:03.26. Dissa lowered the previous state record of 4:03.46 set by Ridgefield’s Steven Hergenrother at the same meet last year.

Discus and Hammer Throws

The rain ended the boys discus early and meet organizers opted to not continue the first day of events at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals in Philadelphia PA. Luckily, Simsbury’s Marshall Potter unleashed a lifetime best of 194-4 on his first throw which not only made the finals, it broke Gary Moore’s CT state record by just over a foot. According to Bloomfield coach Damian Larkins, Potter had a sector foul in the finals that was around 200 feet and was looking forward to getting a legal throw in that range but lost that opportunity. The UConn committed senior has earned his second New Balance Nationals medal after taking 5th in the shot put the recent indoor season.

Everyone who follows CT track and field knows throwing has taken off the past four years. But even the most knowledgeable fan could not have predicted the results in the next few days at NBNO. Moving onto Saturday’s competition Marshall Potter returned and put up a prodigious hammer throw mark of 227-9 to earn his third NBNO All American medal with a new state record. To put this mark in perspective the previous CT state record in the event was AJ Guerra’s 15-year old mark of 211-2. The best word to describe this is “Beamonesque” which is a word invented after Bob Beamon's spectacular leap broke the long jump world record by nearly two feet in the 1968 Olympics. His record was thought to be unbreakable and stood for 23 years and in fact is still the 2nd best jump in history.

110m Shuttle Hurdle Relay Record

Last Sunday started off bright and early with the seldom run shuttle hurdle relays at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals in Philadelphia PA. The Bloomfield boys team of Zion Banton, Shaun Lazenby, Jessie Singleton Jr. and State Open champion Delante Senior each ran110m hurdles back and forth on the homestretch of the track and won their heat and finished 3rd overall in a new state record of 58.36. Their CCC rivals East Hartford took 14th in 1:00.85, the 2nd fastest time in state history.

Girl’s State Records

1600m

The sole State Open meet record on the girls side was set in the 1600m with both Brooke Strauss of Glastonbury and Chase Gilbert of Lyme Old Lyme both going under Katie Bohlke’s record of 4:46.46 set last year. The race started off with Strauss, Gilbert and Liv Sherry setting a blistering pace and then at the bell Strauss put it into overdrive and finished with a 65 second last lap to crush the record, running a time of 4:40.62 with Gilbert also going under the record with a time of 4:46.46. Sherry hung on for third in a PR time of 4:39.39 and became the 13th fastest 1600m runner in state history. Strauss moves up to US #12 and Gilbert is now ranked #47 nationally. A little farther back freshman Lauren Parrett of Glastonbury (4:55.89) and junior Alexandra Morgan (4:58.93) of Fairfield Warde broke five minutes for the first time and another freshman, Cora Wasiolek of Mercy ran a PR of 5:04.56 in the first heat to round out the top six one of the most incredibly deep fields seen in Open history.

1-Mile

The third New Hampshire Distance Festival, once again presented by Marathon Sports and HOKA, was held Friday night May 2nd at Souhegan (NH) HS that featured two Elite Mile races where CT entrants took home top honors.

Brooke Strauss won the BSR Girls Elite Scholastic Mile in a new Connecticut state record of 4:39.88. It seems like every time Strauss toes the line, another all time CT record goes down. This indoor track season she has broken the 1000m record (2:46.05), 1600m (4:46.60), mile (4:39.53) and 3000 (9:30.58). And the UConn bound senior doesn’t just run fast; she knows how to win. In cross country, she was the State Open and New England champion and during indoor she won the State Open and New England champion in the 1000m, plus that little mile race in Boston, known as the New Balance Nationals Indoor Championships.

Now she has begun her last season of high school outdoor track, and she has already run a solo 10:16 3200m in a dual meet and on Friday night at Souhegan (NH) High she faced a star studded field and drew upon her blazing kick on the final straightaway to become the first Connecticut girls to go under 4:40. With the exception of the rabbit who was a good 30 meters in front of the pack, she led most of the race with Mass champion Abby Hennessy of Westford Academy hot on her heels. Despite being injured most of the winter, Hennessy still finished 7th at NBNI from the non championship heat and was 2nd last weekend at Penn Relays. With 250m to go, she made a charge and grabbed the lead, but Strauss stayed patient and relaxed and passed on the inside with about 75 meters left and came out on top by less than a second. Nine other girls broke five minutes but were far out of the picture by the end.

4x100m Shuttle Hurdle Relay

Last Sunday morning at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals in Philadelphia PA the girls 100m shuttle hurdles relay saw another state record when Windsor’s team of Jordyn Williams, Kayla Elder, LaSonya Campbell and Layla Harris finished 11th overall with a time of 1:04.45.

According to Coach Kelvin Kearse, “The girls have really been working hard all year. Especially after Coach Milledge left the team at the beginning of the Outdoor season. My daughter, Doctor Courtney Kearse stepped in and helped each of our hurdlers achieve personal bests individually and now as a group. What is really impressive is the fact that this record was achieved without our top returning hurdler, Tomari Gillespie, from last year. Tomari fought injuries all year and was only able to hurdle a couple of times. The quartet of Jordyn Williams, Kayla Elder, LaSonya Campbell, and Layla Harris, worked really well together. All are returning, except Jordyn, who’s headed to Morgan State to run track.”

4000m Distance Medley Relay

Glastonbury has long been the standard of distance running excellence in Connecticut and the Guardians were able to pull out another state record in the Distance Medley Relay last Sunday at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals. Their time of 11:44.50 was the fastest time for a CT team since 2016 and they were able to break the 11-year old record anchored by Staples’ All American Hannah Debalsi by almost two seconds. They were led off by indoor State Open 3200m champion Lauren Parrett who split 3:38.88 and Class LL indoor 300m champion Audrey O’Hare who split a 400m PR of  58.13. Next came Indoor 4x800m All American Lila Garbett who ran 2:20.35 and state mile record holder and NBNI champion Brooke Strauss who ran 4:47.16.

Heptathlon

D’Asia Duncan has been competing in track since 2nd grade and competed in her first multi-event competition while only in 3rd grade. After all these years she has already earned All American last year and competed internationally in Bahrain. On Friday and Saturday at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals she competed in seven events to finish 5th in the heptathlon with 5,065 points which broke 26-year old CT state record by Hillhouse’s Nicolette Chambers by 31 points.

The Bloomfield junior ran 14.14 for the 100m hurdles, high jumped 5-1.75, tossed the shot put 28-1.5 and ran 25.26 for 200m to hold the 6th spot on the first day. During Friday’s competition she long jumped 18-1, threw the javelin 100-2 and ran a huge PR of 2:13.34 for the 800m for her record total points.

“I feel amazing!’, explained Duncan. “I worked so hard and was hoping it would all come together when it mattered. The competition was definitely harder than last year so I was happy that I was not only able to execute and become a NBNO All-American for the 2nd year in a row, but also able to break the CT state record that has stood for over 25 years. All of my running events were very strong so I'm just beyond proud of myself. I’m also extremely thankful for my coaches, my crew and international/national supporters that cheered me on every step of the way.”
