Connecticut is a small state and is often overlooked in the world of track and field. While we might not be as strong as powerhouse states like Florida, California and Texas, the Nutmeg State definitely punched above its weight this weekend at New Balance Nationals Outdoors in Philadelphia. Twelve individuals/ relays earned All American honors and three state records were set over the past five days. Check back on MySportsResults previous two recaps and follow along as we recap Sunday’s performances.

Glastonbury has long been the standard of distance running excellence in Connecticut and the Guardians were able to pull out another state record in the Distance Medley Relay. Their time of 11:44.50 was the fastest time for a CT team since 2016 and they were able to break the 11-year old record anchored by Staples’ All American Hannah Debalsi by almost two seconds. They were led off by indoor State Open 3200m champion Lauren Parrett who split 3:38.88 and Class LL indoor 300m champion Audrey O’Hare who split a 400m PR of  58.13. Next came Indoor 4x800m All American Lila Garbett who ran 2:20.35 and state mile record holder and NBNI champion Brooke Strauss who ran 4:47.16.

“Both Seniors Lila Garbett and Brooke Strauss had bounce back performances. Their earlier events didn’t go as planned but they showed up and ended their careers at Glastonbury on a high note” expressed Glastonbury first year coach Brian Gaudreau. “Freshman Lauren Parrett had a great lead off leg while Junior Audrey O’Hare continued to move them in contention for a chance at All American. The girls always seem to pull off something special in the relays.”

Championship Shuttle Hurdle Relay Record Alerts

The day started off bright and early with the seldom run shuttle hurdle relays. Bloomfield boys team of Zion Banton, Shaun Lazenby, Jessie Singleton Jr. and State Open champion Delante Senior each ran110m hurdles back and forth on the homestretch of the track and won their heat and finished 3rd overall in a new state record of 58.36. Their CCC rivals East Hartford took 14th in 1:00.85, the 2nd fastest time in state history.

The girls 100m shuttle hurdles relay saw another state record when Windsor’s team of Jordyn Williams, Kayla Elder, LaSonya Campbell and Layla Harris finished 11th overall with a time of 1:04.45.

Boys Championship Javelin Finals

The throwing events were the most successful areas for Connecticut athletes. It was basically a weekend of CT versus the world. Marshall Potter earned All American and broke state records in both the discus and hammer throws and Tom Matlock and Chris Amy both earned medals in the shot put. On Sunday, Rockville’s Tom Bannon continued the trend and took fifth place in the javelin with a throw of 199-3 which gave in-state athletes five medals in the four throwing events. This was the Rockville senior’s first loss of the season and hopefully he will take advantage of one of the upcoming summer meets and go after Stephen Simalchik’s state record which is only a foot away at 212-09. Athletes have until August 31st of the athlete’s graduation year to be eligible for state records.

Bannon expressed his pride at representing CT by sayin “I’m honored to represent Connecticut and be part of such a small, elite group of athletes who’ve made it this far. It’s also really awesome to see how strong Connecticut has become in the throwing events. We’ve got a great group of throwing athletes, who are super supportive of one another, and to see everyone’s work pay off at nationals is amazing. Can’t wait to see what all these guys end up doing in the next 4 years.”

Boys Championship Distance Medley

Ridgefield boys have earned All American in the distance medley the past three years and have gone under 10 minutes each time. This year the team of Charles Lovett (3:03.55) William Gallaway (50.16), Aidan Nelson (1:54.11) and Magnus Manley (4:07.67) ran 9:55.47 to take 3rd place. Last year the Tigers went under the national high school record but barely lost to Crater, Central Point, Oregon. Lovett and Manley were instrumental parts of last year’s team that ran the CT state record of 9:44.44. The Tigers also had a B team that finished 34th in 10:30.23. Gallaway is the only junior on the “A” team but the “B” team returns Kieran Boyle, and Alexander Glenn so you never know what the boys from North Salem Rd might pull out of their hat next  year.

Farewell Seniors

As graduation season is behind us, MySportsResults would like to congratulate our track and field and cross country athletes and wish you the best of luck in whatever your future holds. Some will head to college and trade schools, others to the military or the workforce. But remember the lessons you learned throughout your athletic career which included dedication, discipline, working together and long term commitment. If you put the same energy into your future endeavors, you will surely be successful.
