State Records by Potter and Duncan Highlight First 2 Days of CT at New Balance Nationals OutdoorPublished by
By Senior Correspondent Marty Ogden, Editing and Graphics by Ron Knapp A few rain-storms delayed competition on the first day of the New Balance Nationals Outdoor Track and Field Championship held at Franklin Field in Philadelphia on Thursday but several Connecticut athletes came away with All American honors in the first two days of competition along with two CT state records. CT Throwers Display Talents on National Stage The rain ended the boys discus early and meet organizers opted to not continue the first day of the NBNO event on Thursday. Luckily, Simsbury’s Marshall Potter unleashed a lifetime best of 194-4 on his first throw which not only made the finals, it broke Gary Moore’s CT state record by just over a foot. According to Bloomfield coach Damian Larkins, Potter had a sector foul in the finals that was around 200 feet and was looking forward to getting a legal throw in that range but lost that opportunity. The UConn committed senior has earned his second New Balance Nationals medal after taking 5th in the shot put the recent indoor season. Connecticut throwing is certainly making an impact on the national scene. It wasn’t just Potter in the discus. In the shot put, the Constitution State put three in the top ten with East Lyme’s Thomas Matlock and Chris Amy of Norwich Free Academy earning All American status. Matlock, who is heading to Mississippi State University next year, had the greatest series of his life with five of his six throws going over 62 feet with his last throw of 64-8 taking the bronze medal. Amy, who will attend Southern Connecticut, was 4th with his outdoor PR of 64-0.5 to give CT two All American finishers. Potter, fresh off his All American performance in the discus, was 10th at 60-5.25. Girls Championship Heptathlon D’Asia Duncan has been competing in track since 2nd grade and competed in her first multi-event competition while only in 3rd grade. After all these years she has already earned All American last year and competed internationally in Bahrain. On Friday and Saturday she competed in seven events to finish 5th in the heptathlon with 5,065 points which broke 26-year old CT state record by Hillhouse’s Nicolette Chambers by 31 points. The Bloomfield junior ran 14.14 for the 100m hurdles, high jumped 5-1.75, tossed the shot put 28-1.5 and ran 25.26 for 200m to hold the 6th spot on the first day. During Friday’s competition she long jumped 18-1, threw the javelin 100-2 and ran a huge PR of 2:13.34 for the 800m for her record total points. “I feel amazing!’, explained Duncan. “I worked so hard and was hoping it would all come together when it mattered. The competition was definitely harder than last year so I was happy that I was not only able to execute and become a NBNO All-American for the 2nd year in a row, but also able to break the CT state record that has stood for over 25 years. All of my running events were very strong so I'm just beyond proud of myself. I’m also extremely thankful for my coaches, my crew and international/national supporters that cheered me on every step of the way.” Visit the only site for the latest Connecticut High School State Records for Outdoor and Indoor Track & Field at My Track and Field Records.Boys 4x1 Mile Championship Goals delayed don’t mean goals denied. East Lyme just missed out on All American status in the 4x1 Mile with their 7th place finish at NBNI. After winning their first State Open team title a few weeks ago, the Vikings capped off their outstanding season with a 6th place finish on Thursday after the storms had passed. Sean McCauley (4:23.64), Matthew Carrier (4:22.14) and Jack Faitsch (4:30.28) handed off to State Open and New England 1600m runner-up Sam Leone who split a PR of 4:12.68 and passed Boston College High School to move into the final medal spot. According to coach Mike Flynn “After New Englands, I told him you are learning hard lesson that will pay off later. And you can tell he was not going to get passed those last 250m.” The foursome combined to run 17:28.72 to earn All American status and run the 5th fastest time in CT history. Boys Championship Decathlon This winter Guilford’s Ethan Wienkamp was 3rd in the pentathlon at Nike Indoor Nationals and he used that experience to finish 5th in the decathlon with 6658 points, almost 600 points better than he did at the Greater Hartford Invitational. He ran a PR of 10.97 in the 100m and long jumped 21-6. He tossed the shot put 42-0.5 and high jumped 5-6.5 ½. He finished day one with another PR of 49.65 in the 400m. He started the final day of competition on Friday finishing in 15.54 for the 110m hurdles and threw the discus 131-2. In the pole vault he had a nearly foot PR of 10-4.0 and then transitioned for a 163-11 throw for the javelin. Finally in the last event of the two day competition, he finished the grueling 1500m in a time of 4:48.30 which moved him up to #4 CT all time and a spot on the podium. Boys Championship 4x800m Relay - SEEDED Section Track inflation is a real thing. Times that once seemed other worldly just a few years ago aren’t getting the honors they once received. Ridgefield’s boys team of Magnus Manley (1:55.17), Aidan Nelson (1:53.54), Trevor Fuller (1:55.28) and Charles Lovett (1:54.33) broke their school record and inched even closer to Hamden’s state record of 7:35.68 that was the winning time at NBNO 15 years ago as the Tigers finished 9th, just outside the medal territory. Boys Championship 4x800m Relay - UNSEEDED Sections Probably still high after their New England 4x800m victory last weekend, New Canaan found still another level to finish off their historic season. The Rams team of Ryan Monohan, Ryan Jordan, Quinn Kilkenny and Ryan Boulanger went under their old school record for the 4th time this season and lowered it to 7:45.48, which is 7th fastest in state history. For their efforts they finished 2nd in their heat and 6th overall in the unseeded section and 16th among all sections. Girls Championship 1600m SMR Another school rewriting their record books this year has been Lyme-Old Lyme. They missed All American honors by one place, finishing 7th in 4:02.03. Tabitha Colwell, Serena Mazzi, Zoe Eastman-Grossel and Chase Gilbert (2:09.97 split) improved upon their #2 ranked time in state history. Also breaking their school record was Greenwich who finished 11th in 4:06.88 and moved up to #6 all time in state history.
