CT HOKA Athletes of Week Two Honors Awarded to Brooke Strauss and Owen MartinPublished by
By Senior Correspondent Marty Ogden, Editing and Graphics by Ron Knapp Throughout the remainder of the 2024-25 Indoor season, MySportsResults will continue to recognize our top boys' and girls' track and field athletes each week with the help of your votes. In our second polling of athletes in the final performances of 2024 voters awarded Brooke Strauss of Glastonbury with 153 votes and Owen Martin of Xavier with 184 votes as the CT HOKA Athletes of the Week. In addition to the recognition each week award recipients will receive a commemorative t-shirt in recognition of their performance that is sent to their school in care of their coach. At the Hillhouse Holiday Meet in New Haven last Saturday, Foot Locker Cross Country All American Brooke Strauss opened her indoor campaign with two solid races. She ran her 7th sub five minutes 1600m/mile race of her career, easily winning in 4:55.25. At the end of the meet, she joined her Glastonbury teammates Olivia McKay, Abigail Horesco and Lauren Parrett to become the first CT 4x800m team under ten minutes. Their time of 9:56.56 won by over 30 seconds with Strauss splitting 2:15. The MSTCA Boston Holiday Challenge in Boston last Saturday saw multiple relay All American Owen Martin of Xavier go under the 2:30 mark in the 1000m. Martin took 2nd in 2:28.51 which is not only the 11th fastest time in state history, it also broke JT Burke’s school record. Long time fans of the sport might remember one of the great rivalries in the sport between Burke and Staple’s Tom Sheeran. Burke broke the state record in 1989 winning the Class L championship in 2:29.71. A week later Sheeran turned the tables and won 2:29.80. In addition to our award winners, voting results were as follows for all other girls and boys nominees: Girls Nominees Lauren Kropo, Naugatuck, winner of 55m & 300m at Hillhouse Holiday Meet in PR 7.17 & 40.62 (Votes: 102) Vanessa Agyemang, Bloomfield, LJ winner at MSTCA Boston Holiday Challenge in PR of 19-0.75, CT #9 all time.
