CT had so many outstanding performances at NBNO, it is hard to choose which to highlight. Check out which teams earned medals and/ broke significant records on Friday in Philadelphia While there were many noteworthy results throughout the day, after the rain delay, CT athletes really shined as the sun was going down at the end of a long day. In the last event of the day, Windsor boys, the State Open champions in the 4x100m and 4x200m not only broke their school record, but the state and New England record as well with a third place finish in a time of 1:26.23. The team of Taeshawn Berry, Maxim Copeland, Damion Sparrow and Jordan Crain won the 7th of 10 heats and now hold the CT and NE records in the 4x100m and 4x200m relays. The Warrior’s 2013 team holds the state and NE 4x400m record from 2013 and that is the goal for Sunday night. The Bloomfield girls dominated the 200m at the State Open taking the top three spots and 7th. They used that depth to finish 6th in the 4x200m to earn their place on the podium, becoming the first CT team under the 1:40 barrier, running 1:39.95. Their team of Saphyr Brown, Jahniya Barclay, Nacquelia Fletcher and Sianna Lloyd broke Career’s 19-year-old state and New England record. The WarHawks CCC rivals Windsor finished right behind them in 7th place with a team of Tomari Gillespie, Jordyn Williams, Destiny Ross-Bates and Paige Wilson. The Warriors time of 1:40.09 just missed their school record by .04 seconds and earning a medal by .12 seconds. The 4x800m was also extremely successful for Nutmeg State teams. While Glastonbury girls just missed out on earning medals by about a second, their time of 9:00.62 broke Tolland’s CT state record. Ava Gattinella (2:15.69), Brooke Strauss (2:10.56), Jacqueline Dudus (2:24.24) and New England champion Annika Paluska (2:10.14) gave a send off to their long time coach, Brian Collins who is retiring at the end of the season and has always had a great deal of success in this particular relay. Now he can claim to have coached the fastest indoor and outdoor times in state history. In the previous 4x800m heat, the Hall girls’ team of Abigail Sanderson, Madeline Peterson, Lauren Moskal, and Rylan Priest used 2:16 bookends to close their season with their school record time of 9:18.13 to finish 18th of the 59 teams. In a prior heat, the EO Smith team of Emerson Whalen, Alexis Buskey, Jordan Stygar, and Gabriella Hernandez finished in one their best in school history in 9:22.39 for 20th place overall. Speaking of success in relays, Hall boys have had their fair share of outstanding teams. In the past several years, the Titans have had multiple All American teams in the 4x400m, SMR and 4x800m during indoor and outdoor track seasons. Jacob Szalewicz (1:54.41), Jon York (1:53.66), Connor Mayr (1:59.88) and Gabe Sisk (1:54.30) finished 2nd in the 3rd of 4 heats which stood up for 6th place overall to add their names to the list of Hall All American honors. Their time of 7:43.85 bumped them ahead of Danbury’s 2007 team that held the state record for several years and is now 4th fastest in state history behind Hamden, Ridgefield and Staples. The biggest surprise for Hall was York’s 1:53 split. The senior, who has been a member of no fewer than six scoring teams in three years, has had some hamstring injuries that have prevented him reaching his considerable potential this spring. His first 800m of the spring was a member of the New England championship 4x800m team where he ran a 1:59. He was able to drop six seconds off his time to move his team into the lead in his heat. Bloomfield’s D’Asia Duncan was sitting in 9th place after day one of the heptathlon but a 17-4.75 mark in the long jump and a toss of 91-7 in the javelin moved her into 7th place going into the last event, the 800m, 112 points behind 6th place. Most multi event athletes dred the 800m because besides being the last event of the two day event, it is also the longest event. But Duncan attacked the race without any fear, going through the 400m in 1:05 and finishing in 2:16.96, a nearly eight second PR that moved her into the 4th place and earning NBNO All American. Her total of 4,686 improved upon her performance of 4,449 from the NY Relays in April and makes her the 3rd best heptathlete in CT history behind only such historic names as Nicolette Chambers (5,034 points) and Nicole Toney (4,807points). “I was super proud I was able to redeem myself after not doing so well day one, especially in my main event.” Duncan stated. “I also expected to do better with shot put so day one ended with a little discouragement but I knew I would pull through day two.” The championship girls 1600m sprint medley relay rewrote the all time list in CT with four teams setting school records and cracking into the top 20 fastest school records in state history. The Conard girls team of Daphne Brewer, Annabel Tracy, Liv Sherry and Tess Sherry (split 2:12.39) won their heat and finished 13th overall with a time of 4:05.85 to become the 3rd fastest school in state history. Shelton and Branford had a great battle at the O’Grady Relays in April to both set school records. While they ran in separate heats on Friday they both improved upon their records. The Gaels team of Sailor Martin, Jahneil Marshall, Stephanie Sanborn and Hannah Andrejczyk (Split 2:14.15) finished in 4:08.87 to knock nearly two seconds off their school record to move up to the#10 CT all time list to finish 24th. Branford finished 25th overall with a team of Joelle Budz, Djamilla Toukour, Glorianna Buckley and Lucy Moran (Split- 2:11.74) to finish in a time of 4:09.19, almost two seconds better than their previous school record. Coming in 37th was Bloomfield’s team of Sianna Lloyd, Nacquelia Fletcher, Soleigh Dixon, and Kiylah Williams (split- 2:23.14) who ran 4:11.67, which is currently the 19th fastest school record in state history. The boys 1600m SMR also saw some great action from CT teams on Friday. Lyman Hall’s team of Timothy Conklin, Domenico Colella, Michael Fisher and Thomas Conklin (Split-1:53.37) finished 12th overall and was just a second and a half off of Hall’s state record of 3:26.26 they set in 2019 when they won NBNO. Their time of 3:27.80 not only breaks their school record they set last year when they were 14th at this meet, they also moved up to #5 all time in CT history. Simsbury also ran a solid race, finishing in 18th place with a time of 3:30.87. The team of Adam Devine, Ransom Marcy, Evan Harris and Daniel Coyne (split- 1:53.61) ran the 11th fastest school record in state history.
