Meghan Owen of Killingly finishes the 1600m in 4:49.78

Lacey Ann Parker of Ledyard wins Shot Put

Ken Walker of Bloomfield speeds to win in 100m

(Apr 20, 2003) On Saturday at the Trinity College Invite, Meghan Owen of Killingly served notice to her state and national competitors that she will push the pace in all of her races this season. Owen's double victories in the 1600m (4:4.78) and 800m (2:15.63) highlighted the second day of competition at the early spring meet.

The Wilbur Cross girls team also showed early season speed as the Calhoun sisters traded places in the 100m and 200m; Shantea (1st-100, 2nd-200m) and Shanea (1st-200m, 2nd-100m). Teammate Neia Smith captured the 100m hurdles. The trio then teamed with Tynesha McKnight to win the 4x100m relay. In the field events, Lacey Ann Parker of Ledyard continued her dominance from the indoor season with victories in the shot put and discus throw.

In the boy's competition, Ken Walker of Bloomfield scored double victories in the 100m and 200m dashes. The field events also produced double winners as Matt Zagura of Ellington captured the Shot Put and Hammer Throw while Marvin Gilchrist (Windham) took top honors in the Triple and Long Jumps. Windham also captured top place in the High Jump with Tyler DiGiovanni's jump of 6-4. Wilbur Cross was the only double winner in the relays with victories in the 4x100m and 4x400m. In the distance events, Reynolds Chapman (Griswold) used a final lap kick to outpace Ahmed Haji (Conard) 4:22.76 to 4:24.99 in the 1600m run. The always grueling 3000m Steeplechase was led from start to finish by David Holliday (Ledyard); who won with a time of 9:39.25. There was an exciting finish in the 110m High Hurdles as Jerome Harris (Hamden) nipped Sean Berg (Fitch) 14.71 to 14.90.
