Boudreau and LeBlanc Return Danbury to Top while Gray and Jones
Lead Weaver to 3rd Title at CIAC State Open Meet...
(Feb 17, 2007) At the CIAC
State State Open Meet today at the New Haven Track and Field Center, one
team narrowly won for the third year in a row while another team
returned to the top of the podium after a two year hiatus. The meet also
provided a few special performances from individuals; including a meet
and state record, several double event winners and two repeat winners.
The Boys State Open Championship title was won by Danbury High
School, a position they last held in 2004, with a 56 to 44 point
victory over runner-up Glastonbury. Danbury received wins in
three events, Parker Boudreau in the 1000m (2:31.15), Bryan LeBlanc in
the Shot Put (56'4.75") and the Sprint Medley Relay of Nicholas Rosa,
Emmanuel Omokaro, Mike Danzy and Bourdreau (3:40.03). Also scoring
important points for Danbury was Justin Chiaravalle (55m hurdles-3rd)
behind winner Iren Williams of Weaver (7.48) and their 4x400m relay team
(2nd) edged by Staples (3:31.25) and the 4x200m relay team (3rd)
finishing behind Bloomfield (1:33.22) and Weaver. In the first event of
the meet, the Manchester 4x800m relay team won in 8:08.84 in an exciting
race with Wilby (2nd) and Glastonbury (3rd). The sprint races were
dominated by Terrell Wilks of Hillhouse who won both the 55m and 300m
dashes (6.39, 34.69). The 600m race saw Josh Perry of Naugatuck edge
Brendan Cristobal of Staples at the finish line, 1:22.69 to 1:22.74. In
one of the most demanding feats, Donald Cabral of Glastonbury won both
the 1600m and 3200m runs (4:17.63, 9:26.54), which was last accomplished
at the 2004 meet by Gavin Coombs of Griswold (4:24.25, 9:20.69).
Nicholas Frimpong of East Hartford continued his win streak in the High
Jump by clearing 6'6" for the win while Maurice Calenda of Bloomfield
won his third Long Jump title in three weeks with a leap of 22'3.75".
The Pole Vault was marked by close competition among several athletes
but Matt Alexander of Windham Tech emerged as the only one who cleared
14'2" to win the event.
In their quest for a third straight Girls State Open title,
the Weaver Girls team needed to win or place second in the final
event of the meet, the 4x200m relay, to overtake Glastonbury. Leaving
nothing to chance, Weaver won the race and the title by a 47 to 44 point
margin over runner-up Glastonbury. The Weaver title was powered
by wins from Shaena Gray in the 600m (1:35.77), their 4x400m relay team
of Gray, Cassandra Bennett, Clervine Sanon and Crystal Davis and their
4x200m relay team of Davis, Catherine Milledge, Christine Jones and Sahnique Castella.
Jones also provided much needed points in the Long Jump (2nd) behind
winner Lauren Tanz of Brookfield (18'6.5") and the 300m (3rd) following
both Ann Marie Clark of Hillhouse (40.65) and Elsa Millett of
Manchester. In addition to her Long Jump victory, Tanz also won the 55m
Hurdles in 8.27, a double effort last achieved by Natasha Harvey of
Career at the 2005 Open meet. The majority of the Glastonbury points
came from four winning efforts, Christine Vogel in the 1000m run
(2:57.87), Jamie Olson in the 1600m run (5:06.86) and both the 4x800m
relay (9:34.59) anchored by Olson and the 1600m Sprint Medley relay
(4:17.85) anchored by Vogel. The meet record in the Pole Vault was set
by Jessica Sullivan of Norwich Free Academy as she cleared 11'6", which
also improved upon her state record of 11'0". Junior Heather Stephens of
Ridgefield won the 3200m run for the third year with a time of 11:02.58.
Another repeat winner from last year was Allison Barwise of Amity in the
High Jump as she cleared 5'4" to win the event. Shelby Walton of Danbury
emerged as the fastest female of the day as she won the 55m dash in 7.18
while Athalia Smith of New Britain earned the Shot Put champion title
with a heave of 38'8.50".

(Feb 10, 2007) The records came
fast and furious at the late matinee session of the CIAC State Class

time the record setting had ended for the class meet that was created in
2004, the Glastonbury Girls Team and the Danbury Boys Team were awarded
the championship plaques. In the Girls Class LL meet that saw ten new
records, the Glastonbury Girls won their second consecutive title
by a 77 to 57 point margin over Amity. Glastonbury was led by a
win from senior Jamie Olson in the 1600m run (5:13.68) as well as two
meet record efforts from their Sprint Medley relay (4:17.94) and their
4x400m relay (4:06.22). Glastonbury also won the 4x800m relay in 9:39.88
while Christine Vogel was a close second in the 1000m (2:59.87) to Heather Stephens of Ridgefield in her meet record 2:59.13. Jillian Pizzo of Glastonbury placed second

Shelkova of Newington in the Long Jump (17'10") and the Danbury 4x200m
relay team (1:47.24).
The Danbury Boys team returned to the top of Class LL after
winning the inaugural meet in 2004 with a 107 to 76 point victory over
Glastonbury. Parker Boudreau of Danbury set a new meet record in
the 1000m with a time of 2:31.83 while teammate Michael Lorick won the
55m dash in a meet record 6.44 and the 300m dash in 36.33. Other winning

Three In a
Row for Weaver Girls and Darien Boys at CIAC Class
M Meet...
(Feb 10, 2007) The last time that
teams other than Weaver or Darien have won team titles at the CIAC State Class
M Meet was in 2004. By mid afternoon on Saturday at the New Haven
Track and Field Center, the Weaver Girls team and the Darien Boys team
were awarded the team titles for the third consecutive year. The
Weaver Girls team earned the title by a 91 to 78 point margin over
Darien in record fashion as Shaena Gray set a new mark in the
600m at 1:36.09 and later helped set a new record in the Sprint Medley
relay with a time of 4:18.90. Weaver also had a 1-2 finish in the 300m
from Clervine Sanon (41.32) and Christine Jones with Jones also running
a leg in the record setting 4x200m relay (1:45.84). Gray and Sanon also
ran as part of the winning 4x400m relay (4:06.97). Weaver also had
strong efforts from Catherine Millidge (2nd-55m) and Christine Jones
(2nd-LJ). Amanda Sumner of Bristol Eastern was a double winner in the
1000m (3:01.77) and the 1600m (5:17.72); Karen Gunon of Tolland was
second in each race. Another outstanding performance was turned in by
Laura Tanz of Brookfield as she won both the 55m hurdles (8.47) and the
Long Jump (18'3"). Darien scored important points from Caroline
McDonough as she won the 3200m run in 11:30.65 and Grace Doering and Meg

The Darien Boys team earned their third consecutive title with a

Wyper won the 1600m in 4:34.77 and Rob McDonald won the High Jump with a

(3rd) and the Sprint Medley relay (3rd). Senior David Macklem of Tolland
won his third consecutive 1000m Class M title with a 2:33.30 effort.

East
Lyme Girls Team Depth and Staples Boys Team Fortune Fuels Wins at CIAC Class
L Meet...
(extended onsite coverage)
(Feb 10, 2007) The outcomes in the
chase for the team titles couldn't have been more diverse before the
start of the final 4x200m relay event at the CIAC State Class L Meet
on Friday night at the New Haven Track and Field Center. The East Lyme
Girls team had already assured themselves of the team plaque before the
event as they had amassed 100 points to 65 for runner-up Hillhouse of
New Haven. On the other side of the ledger, the Conard-West Hartford and
the Staples-Westport Boys teams were locked in a tie at 39 points with
New Canaan and Bristol Central close behind. The East Lyme Girls team
finished the race in second (1:50.81) but moved up to first on an
exchange violation by Hillhouse to take the final 10 points for a total
of 110 points. The team victory by the East Lyme Girls over defending
champion Hillhouse was earned with places in all but two events
that included victories by Laura Benett in the Pole Vault (10'0"), Ann
Scully in the 3200m (11:25.47) and the 4x800m relay (9:43.54). East Lyme
also had key performances from Erika Marks (55m-2nd), Scully
(1600m-2nd), Lean Clement (600m-2nd), Angela Anton (55mH-2nd) and Sara
Muldoon (PV-3rd). East Lyme also placed second in the Sprint Medley
Relay and third in the 4x400m relay. The Hillhouse finish was powered by
a rare three win performance by Ann Marie Clarke (300m-41.25, 55mH-8.52, Long
Jump-17'7"), a win by Shaniqua Burgess in the 55m dash (7.30) as well as
a win in the 4x400m relay (4:13.29) and a 2-3 finish in the 300m from
Burgess and Marlesha McClendon. Other outstanding performances were
recorded by senior Emma Perron of Conard as she won the 1000m in
3:00.95, anchored the winning Sprint Medley Relay team (team time of
4:20.66) and provided a close second place finish to Scully of East Lyme
in the 4x800m relay with a 2:16 split. Another senior standout was
Alasia Griebel of Bristol Central with a win over Scully in the 1600m
(5:12.28) and a hard fought 2nd place to Scully in the 3200m. Bethany
Halligan of Hall-West Hartford was one of a trio of places for her team
as she won the High Jump with a leap of 5'0". Although Alex Barner of
Woodstock Academy was not the top seeded entrant in the Shot Put, she
threw a season best of 37'0.5" to win the event by a foot. Senior Erika
Mansson of Masuk continued her winning efforts from last week as she
captured first place in the 600m (1:38.62).
Prior to the final 4x200m relay event, the chase for the Boys Class L
Team title was a dead heat with Staples and Conard
locked in a 39 point tie and Bristol Central close behind. Conard
was in the second to last heat of the relay while Staples and Bristol
Central were in the last heat of six teams. Conard was on track to a
fast finish in their heat when their third runner crashed to the track
coming out of the first turn with a hamstring injury -- Conard received
no points. In the last heat of the relay, Staples was well into a
close battle with the Bristol Central and both were fortunate to avoid a
race incident as Staples was the event winner in 1:34.71 and repeat as
team champions with 49 points for the fourth year. CCC teams Conard
and Bristol Central finished in a tie for second with 39 points
while New Canaan finished fourth with 37 points. Staples only other win
came from Brendan Cristobal in the 600m (1:23.09) but they received
important finishes from Morgan Block (300m-2nd), their 4x400m relay team
(2nd), and Keaton Cristobal (1000m-4th). The Conard finish was fueled by
a win from Andrew Judd in the 1600m (4:28.90) where he led from start to
finish (also finished 4th in 3200m) and a second place from Jeremy
Goldenberg in the 1000m that was won by Chris Collins of Wilton in
2:35.61. Bristol Central used a win in the 1600m Sprint Medley Relay
(3:41.75), a second place in the 4x200m, a third in the 4x800m relay and
a third place by Brian Robbins in the 600m to pace their team effort.
Joshua Massey of Notre Dame was a double winner as he powered to
victories in the 55m and 300m dashes (6.68 and 36.51). In the 3200m run,
Everett Hackett of Hall-West Hartford also led wire to wire as he
finished in 9:35.65. The Wilby 4x800m relay team started the meet with a
8:08.98 win that involved several exciting lead changes while the
Windsor 4x400m relay team claimed a win in 3:29.98. Another double
winner was Tim Murphy of New Canaan who captured both the High Jump
(6'2") and the Long Jump (22'0.5"). Kyle Chappelle of Fitch passed all
competitors in winning the Pole Vault by clearing 12'6" and Jeff Baker
of Lyman Hall won the Shot Put by narrowest of margins with a 49'10.5"
effort over runner-up Jereimiah Lewis of Bulkeley who threw 49'10.25".

Ellington Boys Tops
Again while Willis Leads Tolland Girls in NCCC Championships...
(Feb 1, 2007) Since the 2001 season, the NCCC Indoor Track and Field
Boys Championship Meet has been dominated by one school. With the
exception of a team title from Tolland last year, the Ellington High
School Boys team has been the team on the winner's podium every year. At
the 2007 NCCC Championships at the New Haven Track and Field Center on
Wednesday night, Ellington added another NCCC team title by scoring a
139 to 110.25 victory over runner-up Tolland. In a meet that saw only
one meet record from Eric Bade of Tolland in the 55m dash (6.71),
Ellington used depth across most events and received victories from
Andrew Sullivan in the 3200m run (2nd in 1600m), Mike Riemer in the Long
Jump, Drew Thompson in the Shot Put, and both the 4x400m and 4x200m
relays. Chris Kelleher had important finishes for Ellington in both the
1000m (2nd) and the 3200m (3rd). Tolland was led by senior standout Dave
Macklem, who won both the 1000m and 1600m runs for the third year in a
row. Tolland also won both the 1600m Sprint Medley and 4x800m relays.
The NCCC Indoor Track and Field Girls Championship Meet was
highlighted by six meet records, three of those from Sam Willis who led
Tolland to their second consecutive team title by a 152 to 94 point
margin over runner-up Suffield. Willis set the meet records in both the
600m (1:42.20) and the 300m (42.17) while helping her 4x400m relay
teammates to a new record in 4:15.30. Willis had ample help from
teammate Karen Gurnon as she was also a triple winner in the 1000m,
1600m and part of the 4x400m relay team. Also scoring for Tolland and
setting a new meet record was Jen Duell in the Shot Put with a 34'5.5"
effort while Amy Dwire was second to Willis in the 600m and 2nd in the
Pole Vault. Alexandra Messmer of Suffield cleared 9'0" in the Pole Vault
to set a new record while the Ellington 4x200m Relay team broke the old
mark when they finished in 1:53.89. Holly Chamberlain of Suffield was
