New England Championships

Hodges, D'Auria, Mitchell and Harvey Tops at New England Championships...
(Mar 5, 2005) The highlight reel on any video taken at the 18th Annual New England Interscholastic Girls' Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center on Friday night should include the stellar first place performances turned in by Monique Hodges of Wethersfield in the 55m Dash (7.11), Kathy D'Auria of Norwich in the 600m run (1:34.83), Kristin Mitchell of Glastonbury in the 1-Mile run (5:12.40) and Natasha Harvey of Career in the 55m Hurdles (8.26). The entire delegation of Connecticut's best female indoor track athletes took home 29 of the top honors that included four first places and six second places. The first place winner's plaque didn't come without a struggle as each had to come from behind to win their respective races. Both Hodges and Harvey came out of a tight-knit group in in their 55m straight-away races while both D'Auria and Mitchell didn't take charge on the oval until the last lap of their races. Also featured on the individual champion's podium were second place finishers Sharelle Green of New London (300m), Kerri Lyons of Wilton (1000m), Shashauna Stewart of Weaver (55m Hurdles) and Tynisha McMillan of Stamford (Shot Put). In the relay events, Weaver High School captured second place twice, their 4x200m team of Renee Thompson, Shashauna Stewart, Lisa Watson and Christine Jones ran 1:46.18 from the unseeded heat and their 4x400m team of Thompson, Sheena Gray, Watson and Sherice Hewitt ran 4:02.35 to better their State Open time.

Fast and Furious - Bradley, Ray and Hyde School Best at New England Championships...
(Mar 5, 2005) If you were distracted for only a short time then you would have missed the fast and furious performances turned in by Connecticut athletes at the 18th Annual New England Interscholastic Boys' Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center on Friday night. Leading the speedy finishes was the nation's best 55m hurdler, Myles Bradley of Norwich. After a steady preliminary hurdle race to qualify, Bradley establish the second-best time in the nation this year with a 7.31 clocking to easily win the final. The Stamford-bound senior already owns the fastest time with 7.26 set at the State Open. He also won the Long Jump with a leap of 22'11.25", well short of his State Open 24'2.25" record jump. In one of the most exciting of the night's oval races, Remi Ray of Staples used a sustained surge in the last 150m of his 600m race to win in an exciting finish with a time of 1:21.85, only several hundredths slower than the state record of 1:21.1 set by Osborne Shaw in 1993. The night's other excitement in the speed category was caused by both Hyde School of New Haven and Lyman Hall of Wallingford in the seeded section of the 4x200m relay race. In a closely contested race through all the relay legs, Hyde maintained the lead down the last straight to hold off a hard-charging Lyman Hall team to win in 1:30.54. The winning time for the Hyde quartet of Don Morris, James Nixon,  Eddie Daniels and Willie Harriott almost broke the state record of 1:30.45 set by Hillhouse at last year's national meet. The Lyman Hall team of Andrew Pratt, Brian McWeeney, Chris Bevins and Chris Hubbard finished second in 1:31.98. Runner-up honors were also earned by James Nixon in the 55m dash, Steve Rochester of Danbury in the 300m and the AI Prince Tech 4x400m relay team of Damion Noble, Sean Arrango, Careca Moore and Chad Higley.

Weaver Girls Return to Top Spot to Win Open Title...
(Feb 19, 2005) At the CIAC State Open Meet Girls held on Saturday, February 19, 2005 at the New Haven Track & Field Center at Hillhouse High School the Weaver-Hartford Girls Team were declared the 2005 State Open Champions, a title they hadn't won since 1993. For the first time this century, the winner of the CIAC Girls State Open Championship scored less than fifty points. Of the forty-two teams that scored in the meet, eight scored more than 21 points, a possible indication that the level of competition has reached a new level of parity.
Weaver totaled 44 points by scoring in six events to outpoint runner-up Middletown with 36, third place Ridgefield with 29 and Hillhouse with 28 points. Weaver earned two first places, both in relays, with a win in the 1600m Sprint Medley and a record time in the 4x400m relay. Their time of 4:03.94 eclipsed the old mark of 4:05.11 set by New Canaan in 1998. Weaver was led by junior Sashauna Stewart in the 55m (3rd) and the 55m Hurdles (2nd) while Renee Thompson provided a fifth in the 300m. Their 4x200m relay team also earned valuable points with a second place finish behind Career.
Other meet highlights include a quick finish by senior Monique Hodges of Wethersfield who captured the 55m dash in 7.11, only two-hundredths of a second slower than the open record. The 1000m race saw the top four runners under 3:02 with winner Kerri Lyons (Wilton) winning in 2:57.96 over Elisabeth Fitter (Branford), Heather Bemis (Conard) and Kelsey LeBuffe (Hall). The 600m run produced a record time as Kathy D'Auria of Norwich ran 1:35.74.
The youth corps was on the march as both the 1600m and 3200m runs featured freshman winners and sophomores in three of the top four places. The 1600m was won by Kristin Mitchell (Glastonbury), who also anchored the winning 4x800m relay. Mitchell was followed by sophomore Emma Perron (Conard), senior Sonia Haerizadeh (Amity) and sophomore Kelly Sorrell (Lyman Memorial). Later in the meet, the 3200m run was won by Heather Stephens of Ridgefield who ran 11:07 for the second consecutive week. She was followed to the tape by sophomore Kelly Sorrell (Lyman Memorial), senior Anja Kreiger-Redwood (Greenwich) and sophomore Caitlin Cannon (Conard).
More notable meet performances were recorded by Nora Miller of Middletown as she won the 55m Hurdles and was second in the Long Jump. Natasha Harvey of Career secured two wins; in the Long Jump at 19'1.25" and as anchor on the 4x200m relay. Daniela Ponte (Torrington) defended her Pole title while Tynisha McMillan of Stamford won the Shot Put.

Hyde Wins First Open Title Over Bradley of NFA ...
(Feb 19, 2005) In the CIAC State Open Meet Boys held on Saturday, February 19, 2005 at the New Haven Track & Field Center at Hillhouse High School, Hyde Leadership School of New Haven won its first Open title. Pretty impressive for a school that first opened its doors in 1993. As in the Girls meet, it seems that there is enough good talent spread around the Connecticut schools as 42 teams scored and the top six scored more than 20 points.
Hyde scored in only four events but with three first places and a second place for a total of 38 points it was enough to outpoint the Herculean effort by Myles Bradley of Norwich who won all three of his events for 30 points. Prince Tech followed in third with 28 points and Manchester was fourth with 24 points.
Hyde's dynamic duo of James Nixon and Willie Harriott helped account for all of the points as then sprinted to a 1-2 finish in the 55m dash, Nixon a 300m dash first and then teamed with Don Morris and Eddie Daniels for a victory in the 4x200m Relay. Their relay time of 1:31.54 was good enough for a new meet record as well.
To say that Myles Bradley of Norwich Free Academy did all he could to win the meet for his team would qualify as the understatement of the year. His record time of 7.26 in winning the 55m Hurdles places him first in the national rankings this year. His record jump of 24'2.25" now ranks him third on the nation best indoor list. And oh, by the way, he also found enough strength and energy to win the High Jump at 6'4".
The other hot events included the 600m where Remi Ray (Staples) out-leaned Careca Moore (AI Prince Tech) to win in a record 1:22.43 to Moore's 1:22.54. The other record setting performance featured junior Jay Koloseus of Guilford in the 3200m run with a time of 9:18.80. Koloseus ran a 4:35 first mile to distance himself from the field on his way to breaking the year-old record held by All-American Gavin Coombs. In the 1600m run, junior Tradelle Ward of Griswold used a last lap spurt to pass runner-up Phil Mitchell (Glastonbury) to win in 4:18. 97. The Ridgefield 4x800m relay team won in a quick 8:06.35, a second off record pace. Chris Martens of Branford cleared 14' to win the Pole Vault.

if...Small Word Weighs Heavily on Coaches
(Feb 17, 2005) As the CIAC State Open Meet approaches this weekend, one small word usually weighs heavily on the minds of many of the head track and field coaches who will challenge for the title of State Open Team Champion.
if we only run 1 second faster per relay leg then....
if he jumps like he did two weeks ago then...
if she gets a good start then...
if they don't score in this event then...
if we are lucky then...

If the meet were run on paper from existing performances then results favor these top five Girls teams: Weaver, Hillhouse, Amity, Career, and Middletown but Ridgefield, Conard, East Lyme, Glastonbury, Brookfield and Danbury will challenge the top schools. Similarly, in the race for the Boys Championship title there are five schools, Hyde School, Staples, Hamden, Griswold, and Wilbur Cross who will vie for the top spot. There are several more schools that could figure in determining the State Open Team Champion including A.I. PrinceTech, Guilford, Norwich Free, Fitch, Danbury, East Lyme, Glastonbury, Manchester and Shelton.

On an individual basis there are several races that have the potential to become instant classics as the match-ups between class competitors are introduced. In the Boys Open meet, the first race of the day is the 4x800m relay where Ridgefield will be tested by Fitch, Shelton and Manchester. The Girls 4x800 race will also featured a top rated Ridgefield squad but they won't be tested like the Class L race since Conard is not fielding a relay team.

The Boys 55m Hurdles is a race for first between Myles Bradley (NFA), McNeil Johnson (EHart) and Iren Williams (Weaver) - look for a 4-way race in the Girls 55m Hurdles between Natasha Harvey (Career), Nora Miller (Middletown), Sashauna Stewart (Weaver) and Tiffany Bromfield (Hillhouse). The Boys 55m Dash is no less exciting as the top six, led by James Nixon (Hyde), can all run 6.60 and better. The Girls 55m dash features senior Monique Hodges (Wethersfield) who will be challenged by Leandra Miller and Nora Miller of Middletown.

The Boys 1000m run is a step down from the longer distances for top seeded David Macklem (Tolland), Jay Koloseus (Guilford), Matt Ottulich (Fairfield) and Chris Croff (Griswold). The Girls 1000m looks to be a showcase event as closely ranked Kim Bartlett (Fairfield), Kerri Lyons (Wilton), Heather Bemis (Conard,) Maureen Dooley (Coginchaug) and Kelsey LeBuffe (Hall) figure to push each other for the grueling five laps.

The highlight race of the Boys meets is the 600m where the 12-year old Boys 600m State record of 1:21.1 set by Osborne Shaw and the Open Record of 1:22.77 set by Tiemarcie Ramos are in jeopardy since Class-L winner Remi Ray of Staples will be pushed hard by teammate Rob Stewart, Careca Moore (AI Prince Tech), Ken Yearwood (Fitch), Steve Rochester (Danbury) and Adam McLean (Wilbur Cross).

In the Field events, defending Boys Long Jump champion Myles Bradley (NFA) returns to defend his title against Joe Ardito (Naugatuck), Sean Ware (Bristol Central) and Tomme-Rene Coleman (Hall). The Girls Long Jump features leader Natasha Harrvey (Career), Nora Miller (Middletown) and Whitney Tagliavini (Suffield). The Boys Pole Vault will also offer excitement as three vaulters are seeded at 13' - Chris Martens (Brnaford), Jordan Thull (East Lyme) and Rob Dalto (Darien). The relatively new Girls Pole Vault has two vaulters who have cleared 10' this year - Dara Samuel (Brookfield) and Daniela Ponte (Torrington). The Boys Shot Put field is led by Bryce Buffaloe (Berlin) and Marcus Lucas (Manchester). The Girls Shot Put features the state leaders Tynisha McMillan (Stamford) and Garynn Jackson (East Lyme). The Boys High Jump has the potential to influence the meet outcome as leader Anthony Roberson (Hamden) will be challenged by three AI Prince Tech jumpers including Jayme Ross as well as Sean Ware (Bristol Central).

The two distance events, the 1600m and 3200m, will showcase runners trying to double their way to state titles. In the Boys 1600m, top seed Phil Mitchell (Glastonbury) will be pushed by Tradelle Ward (Griswold), Matt Warren (East Lyme) and Nick Rezendes (Ledyard). The 3200m run later in the meet brings back both Ward and Mitchell to challenge top seed Jay Kolseus (Guilford) and Chris Croff (Griswold) who will have run the 1000m. The Girls events may even be more exciting as top seed Allison Barner (East Lyme) has to contend with an equally talented field of Emma Perron (Conard), Kristin Mitchell (Glastonbury), Sonia Haerizadeh (Amity), Leah Rosenfeld (Ridgefield) and Kerri Lyons (Wilton). The 3200m run may prove to be a highlight race where two freshmen, Heather Stephens (Ridgefield) who ran an 11:07 last week and Mitchell will vie for first place against Kelly Sorrel (Lyman Memorial), Haerizadeh and Anja Kreiger-Redwood (Greenwich).

Make sure to stay for the entire meet because there promises to be an exciting finale when the last two relays; the 4x400m and 4x200m will display the best sprint-till-you-drop performances. In the Boys 4x400m, any of the top six teams can win the event and may come down to who needs it more to win the meet. The Girls 4x400m may also determine the meet outcome as Weaver leads a pack of 5 teams that could also run under 4:10. The Boys 4x200m Open record may also be history as four teams try to win the race. The Girls 4x200m will feature a classic match-up between Career, Weaver and Hillhouse.

If we had only scored one more point then...
