The 2006 NCCC Cross Country season concluded with its annual championship meet at Windsor Lock High School Friday. New team champions were crowned for the girls and the results of the boys’ meet led to co-champions for the first time in some while. The first race of the day featured the girls’ varsity. For the third straight year, a first time cross country runner won the league championship as Suffield Freshman Chelsea Bishop (19:50.39) utilized a powerful final surge to pass and out lean Canton’s Kim Powell (19:50.68) for the conference championship. The team competition was similarly close as eight teams were clustered between 81 and 143 points. Ellington claimed the meet crown narrowly outpacing NCCC newcomer Bolton High School (88). By virtue of their strong showing in the championship meet combined with a strong dual meet record; Ellington claimed the overall conference title with Bolton and previously undefeated canton tying for second. The boys’ race was highlighted by Dave Macklem of Tolland’s repeat as conference champion. Macklem breezed to a fourteen second victory over Ellington’s Andrew Sullivan for his second straight title and fourth consecutive all-NCCC performance. Macklem’s victory was just the beginning of a fine day for the Tolland boys as three other runners placed all- NCCC to give the Eagles a measure of revenge as they turned the tables on Ellington who had beaten them nine days earlier in a dual meet. By virtue of both teams having one loss over the course of the season, the league will have co-champions for the 2006 season.
