| The North Central Connecticut Conference concluded its
cross country season today at its league championship. 2005 marked the
beginning of a new era in the NCCC as the girls ran a five kilometer
course for the first time, replacing the four kilometer distance that had
been the norm for many previous years. The meet was highlighted by a
dominating performance by the Ellington boys’ team and the Avon girls’
team earning its first title since the mid 80’s. Ellington used all conference performances from it’s top five runners to score 35 points comfortably outdistancing runner up Tolland. Tolland did exact a small measure of revenge for a one point loss to Avon during the dual meet season by edging Avon by two points, 73-75, for the second place position. Individually, last year’s fourth place finisher, Dave Macklem, completed an undefeated NCCC season by winning in a in time of 16:00.32. Macklem took an early lead that never disappeared. He was followed by Alec Carlson of Ellington in 16:05.04 and Canton’s Chris Bussiere in 16:18.67. The Avon girls’ team avenged its one loss of the season by defeating previously undefeated Tolland en route to its best performance in nearly twenty years. The Avon girls were paced by three all conference performers; Kate Doyle (4th), Devin Karbowicz (7th), and Marla McPherson (9th). The team scored a total of 69 points to beat out second place Canton (77 points) third place Ellington (105) and last year’s champion Tolland (106). The individual race saw an undefeated season completed by track stand out and first year cross country runner Danielle Loughery of Suffield. Loughery took a lead over defending champion Melissa Hambley of Canton in the third mile en route to a course and meet record of 19:44.66. Hambley placed second in 19:56.50 followed by Canton teammate Kim Powell in third with a time of 20:25.10.
