Some fast performances and some surprises at the 2004 NCCC Cross country meet held at Windsor Locks High School.
On the girls’ side, Tolland placed 5 girls in the top 15 to secure the championship title over second place Canton and third place Ellington. Tolland was led by Freshman Kate Clarke who ran to a third place finish. She was closely followed by teammates Joanna Grab (4th) and Ericca Yorgensen (5th) as Tolland showed a combination of up front running and depth.
The individual title was claimed by Freshman Melissa Hambley of Canton who covered the 2.5 mile course in 15:25. Hambley was followed by 2003 champion Marissa Kellner of Ellington in 15:35.

The boys race saw a front pack of four athletes take charge with Ellington’s Hunter Norte pulling away to win in 16:08 for the 5000 meter course. The next three spots went in rapid succession to Canton’s Chris Bussiere (16:15), Granby’s Mike Sullivan (16:16) and Tolland’s David Macklem (16:17).
The team title was a close battle between Ellington, Canton and Tolland. Ellington’s potent 1-2-3 combination of Norte, Alec Carlson (5th) and Ken Sitek (8th) proved too much for the other team to overcome and Ellington avenged an earlier defeat to Tolland. Canton snuck ahead of Tolland for 2nd place which allowed Ellington to claim the overall crown for themselves.
