ECC Results
Griswold's a little too strong for Fitch
By Day Staff Reports Published on 10/10/2001
Woodstock — Griswold High School put its top four runners before
Fitch's third, allowing the Wolverines to earn a 24-31 victory over the
Falcons in a quad meet Tuesday that featured a matchup of two of the
state's top boys' cross country teams.
“We ran exactly the way we had to run,” Griswold coach Gerry Chester
said. “They're a pretty veteran team. It wasn't like they were nervous
about the meet. It was 'What do I have to do?' and 'Let's do it.' ”
Mike Charron finished first for the Wolverines, completing the 3.1-mile
course in 16 minutes, 17 seconds. Mark Olivier of Fitch followed in
16:23, just edging out Griswold's Gavin Coombs (16:24).
Griswold (11-0) also beat Woodstock Academy, 18-39, and Waterford,
15-45. Griswold had beaten Fitch at the Wickham Invitational Saturday,
where it benefited from a larger field of runners which served to spread
out the points.
“I think it was tougher today than it was at Wickham,” Chester said.
“Because all it took (in the dual meet) was for a couple of kids to
not be were they belong.
“We ran exactly the way we had to run.”
Woodstock's John Graham was fourth in 16:44. The Wolverines and Falcons
split the next six spots, but Griswold earned the advantage thanks to
Brian Laguerre finishing sixth and Billy Preston seventh. Fitch placed
fifth (J.P. Gilbert), eighth (Sean Burbank), ninth (Paul Olivier) and
12th (Brian Ludlum). Jordan Kimble, filling in as the Wolverines' No. 5
with the injury to Reynolds Chapman, finished 10th overall.
“I'm so impressed with him,” Griswold coach Gerry Chester said of
the sophomore. “We've needed some help from him and he's taken the
bull by the horns and stepped up for us.
“We needed him to cover their fifth guy. It worked out just they way
we wanted it to.”
Fitch (6-2, 4-1 ECC Large) beat Woodstock, 20-37, and Waterford, 15-48.
Woodstock (3-4, 2-3 ECC Large) beat Waterford, 15-48. The Lancers are
3-9. Waterford's Kyle Pias was 18th.
- Unbeaten Ledyard completed a perfect regular season
by defeating East Lyme (23-38) in an ECC Large meet and St. Bernard
(15-50). The Vikings earned a split by defeating the Saints (18-46).
Craig Moore of East Lyme (3-4, 2-4 ECC Large) was the individual
winner on his home Rocky Neck State Park course (16:29), while Mike
Sedlack and Mike Scott ran 2-3 for the Colonels (7-0, 5-0 ECC
Large). Ryan Gauthier finished 12th for the Saints (6-6).
- Norwich Free Academy's J.P. Mandelburg outran the
rest of the field by almost a minute, winning a tri-meet in 15:43
and leading the Wildcats to a pair of wins. Teammate Matt Ross was
second over the 3.1 miles in 16:40 as NFA (5-2, 3-2 ECC Large) took
four of the top five spots to beat Killingly, 17-45, and Bacon,
16-46. The Redmen (2-6, 0-5 ECC Large) edged the Bobcats, 26-31,
with the help of Brad Courtois' fourth-place finish. Bacon is 6-6,
5-3.
- Sophomore Emmanuel Gomez won individual honors as
Norwich Tech went 2-1 in a Connecticut Vocational Technical
Conference meet at the Ansonia Nature Center. The Warriors (7-4)
beat Wilcox Tech of Meriden (26-29) and host O'Brien Tech (22-35),
but lost to Abbott Tech of Danbury(21-34). Gomez beat Abbott Tech's
Carlos Mora by a second in 18:17. Steve Duncan was Norwich Tech's
second finisher in ninth place.
