ECC Boys
- Fitch Wins but NFA junior Jon-Paul Mandelburg broke
a course record by two seconds, finishing first in 16:02 in the 3.1
mile race, but Fitch escaped with a 27-28 victory. 'We
knew coming in we were just about even,” Mandelburg said. “We
both lost to Ledyard by one point. It was a test to see who was
stronger.” The victory kept the Falcons (4-1, 3-1) in contention
for the ECC Large Division crown, trailing only first place Ledyard
(5-0, 4-0). The Wildcats slipped to 3-2, 2-2. “It's still going to
be tough for us because Ledyard is very good,” Fitch coach Gerald
Browning said. “It might be easier for us to win the state meet
than the ECC.” The meet played out just as Browning mapped out
during a team meeting Monday, right down to the final margin of
victory. Mark Olivier and J.P. Gilbert led the Falcons, placing
second (16:38) and third (16:50), respectively. Sean Burbank (sixth
in 17:02) and Paul Olivier (seventh in 17:29) also scored valuable
points.
- Unbeaten Ledyard rolled to a 17-46 ECC Large win
over Killingly as Dave Holliday and Mike Sedlack crossed the finish
line together in 17:30 and teammate Mike Scott was third. Brad
Courtois finished fourth for the Redmen (1-5, 0-4), but the Colonels
(5-0, 4-0) captured the next six spots.
- Griswold took the top five places as it
remained undefeated with 15-50 ECC Small Division wins over
Plainfield and Bacon Academy. The Wolverines' (8-0, 8-0) top five
runners — Gavin Coombs, Billy Preston, Mike Charron, Reynolds
Chapman and Brian Laguerre — all finished the 3.1-mile course in
17:51. Bacon (6-4, 5-3) beat Plainfield 21-37 and the Bobcats' top
finisher was Brian Cull in sixth place (18:15). Charlie Hansen was
the top finisher for Plainfield (1-7, 1-7), coming in 11th (19:10).
- Woodstock's John Graham outdueled East Lyme's
Craig Moore to lead the Centaurs (2-2, 2-2) to a 25-32 ECC Large win
over the Vikings (2-3, 1-3). Graham won in 16:44, 17 seconds faster
than Moore on his home Rocky Neck State Park course. East Lyme's
Andrew O'Reilly finished third while Woodstock's Jesse Celko and
Ryan Bonesio were 4-5.
- Four Stonington runners finished in the top
five, leading the Bears to wins over St. Bernard (16-47) and
Waterford (17-44) in the ECC Small Division. Mark Brissette, Sam
Agnello, Max Freiert and Will Agnello led the Bears (7-1, 7-1). Ryan
Gauthier's seventh-place finish helped St. Bernard edge Waterford,
27-28. The Saints are 6-4 and 4-4. Kyle Pias' sixth-place finish
paced Waterford (3-6, 3-5).
- Matt Liebal finished second overall and
Montville defeated Marianapolis Prep, 15-44, in the ECC Small
Division. Tourtellotte, also scheduled to compete, could not field
enough runners. Anson Moody, Dan Sostre, Chad Finn, Mike Krautman,
Mike Potchoiba and Mike Beckwith finished in the top 15 for the
Indians (8-2, 6-2). Marianapolis is 2-7 and 1-7.

Defending State Open champs take care of ECC rival NFA
By Gavin Keefe Published on 10/03/2001 - The Day
Groton — A wave of
Fitch Senior High School runners rolled across the finish line, turning
Tuesday's pivotal Eastern Connecticut Conference girls' cross country
meet into a surprisingly easy day at the beach.
Six of the first eight finishers represented the Falcons, including
winner Betsy Boucher. The margin of victory against rival Norwich Free
Academy was just as impressive, as Fitch posted a 20-38 win to take a
firm hold on first place in the Large Division at 4-0 (5-0 overall). NFA
is 3-1, 3-1.
