Boys - ECC Conference Results 9-18-2001

Things are perfect for Ledyard - By Day Staff Reports - Published on 09/19/2001 

Norwich Ledyard High School won its second boys' cross country race in as many weeks by one point, edging Norwich Free Academy, 28-29, Tuesday afternoon in the Eastern Connecticut Conference's Large Division.

The Colonels, who became the first ECC school since 1997 to beat Fitch in a regular-season meet last week, used six finishers in the top 10 Tuesday to stay unbeaten in the division at 2-0.

Mike Sedlack finished second for the Colonels in 16:36, followed by teammates Mike Scott, Dave Holliday, Kyle Sweet, Rob O'Donnell and Neil Bajorin in the top 10.

NFA's J.P. Mandelburg won the race in 16:01 the first boys' race on NFA's new home course.

In other boys' ECC meets:

Mike Charron, Gavin Coombs and Brian Laguerre crossed the finish line together in 17:35 while teammate Bill Preston was only six seconds behind as Griswold swept the top four places and cruised to ECC Small Division wins over Montville (16-45) and St. Bernard (15-50). The Wolverines (4-0, 4-0) had seven of the top 10 finishers. Matt Liebal finished fifth overall for Montville (5-1, 3-1), leading the Indians past St. Bernard (24-31) and St. Thomas More (23-32). Ryan Gauthier led the Saints (3-2, 2-2) by finishing 10th and Kevin Chang placed 16th to lead the Chancellors (0-2).

Nine Woodstock Academy runners finished in the top 10 during a 19-44 win over Killingly in the ECC Large Division. Woodstock's John Graham finished the 3.1-mile course in 17:33. Teammates Jesse Celko, Jeff Swenson and Jeff Larrow also finished in the top five for the Centaurs (1-1, 1-1). Brad Courtois, second overall, paced the Redmen (0-3, 0-2).

Sam Agnello and Mark Brissette finished tied for first, lifting Stonington to wins over Tourtellotte (19-36) and Bacon Academy (21-34) in the ECC Small Division. Agnello and Brissette finished the 3.1-mile course in 18:04. Brian Cull, third overall, paced all Bacon finishers, lifting the Bobcats past Tourtellotte, 19-36. Chad Tatsey, fourth overall, was Tourtellotte's top finisher.

Windham Tech's Brian Bombria, Jonathan Caswell and Steve Murphy were the top three finishers in the Eagles' sweep of Norwich Tech (19-36) and Grasso Tech (16-39) in the Connecticut Vocational Technical Conference. Steve Duncan finished fifth overall to lead the Warriors past Grasso Tech, 18-42.

Jacob Edwards and Jeff Valentine led the way for Wheeler, placing first and second, as the Lions edged Morgan of Clinton, 24-31, in the Shoreline Conference. Edwards covered the 3.1-mile course in 19:50.

Girls - ECC Conference Results 9-18-2001

Griswold won a significant ECC Small Division tri-meet, beating Montville (25-30) and St. Bernard (24-31). Abbey Sadowski (16:35), Ashley Hoddy (17:30) and Sarah Levy (17:42) were the top three finishers for the Wolverines (4-0, 4-0), who shared the division title with Montville last year. Griswold beat Montville by a point last regular season and lost to the Indians by a point in the ECC Championships. Emily Bowdy was third overall to lead St. Bernard (2-2, 2-2), while Teela Kopp finished fifth overall for the Indians (3-2, 2-2), who beat St. Bernard (23-32).

Bethany Lepine finished the 2.4-mile course in 17:10, helping Bacon Academy over Stonington, 26-29, in the ECC Small Division. Lylette Ozimek and Amanda Bochain also finished in the top five for the Bobcats. Stephanie Carnack, who finished second, led the Bears.

Mallory Keegan won the first girls' race on NFA's new home course in 20:26, leading Norwich Free Academy to a 17-45 win over Ledyard in the ECC Large Division. Donna Merise, Hannah Sheppard and Liz Auger finished in the top five for the Wildcats. Sophie Jolly, fourth overall, paced the Colonels.

Morgan's Claire Spinks was the top finisher in 16:44, but Wheeler sent the next seven runners across the line as the Lions rolled over Morgan, 20-43, in a Shoreline Conference cross country meet. Nicolette Pavlovics was the first Wheeler finisher in 16:49.

In a match up of CCC West powerhouses, Simsbury narrowly defeated Hall-West Hartford by the score of 27 to 28. The meet was won by Nate Rosenthal (Hall) in a time of 17.41 over the hilly 5K course at Simsbury. The top ten finishers were:
