Ledyard boys hand Fitch a rare defeat
St. Bernard coach posts 400th victory

Ledyard — Ledyard High School's boys' cross country team accomplished
something Wednesday no other Eastern Connecticut Conference team had done
since 1997:
Beat Fitch in a conference meet.
Ledyard prevailed 28-29 — Fitch's first loss since Sept. 23, 1997, a span
of 27 straight meets. The Colonels won the season-opening tri-meet, also
defeating Wheeler, 15-50.
“We had seven finish before their fifth did,” Ledyard coach Charlie Ewers
said.
Mike Sedlack, who finished second overall in 16:39, led the top seven
Ledyard finishers. Mike Scott, David Holliday, Neil Bajorin, Rob
O'Donnell, Kyle Sweet and Ryan Moore all finished in the top 11.
Fitch's Mark Olivier won the race in 16:25. Fitch defeated Wheeler, 15-48.

Sharples reaches another milestone

Montville — If you listen to St. Bernard High School cross country coach
Doug Sharples, the most exciting part of his day came in the morning when
his 14-year-old cocker spaniel was hit by a post office truck and then bit
Sharples when he came to the dog's aid.
Miraculously, the dog escaped with only minor injuries. And Sharples,
whose hand started to swell just before his team's meet Wednesday
afternoon, had his hand checked out by a doctor later in the day and was
pronounced fit after being issued an antibiotic.
In between, the Saints helped their coach record his 400th career victory
by sweeping Plainfield (23-34), Tourtellotte Memorial (15-50) and St.
Thomas More (24-32) in the boys' cross country season opener.
“I didn't even tell the kids until is was over,” said Sharples, who
retired from teaching this year but returned to lead St. Bernard for the
34th year.
“Those kids don't care what happened to me 30 years ago, so why make a big
deal about it?”
Sharples needs just two more wins to reach 500 victories overall, counting
his 98 from track and field. He's been the National coach of the year,
two-time New England coach of the year and two-time Connecticut coach of
the year. He's coached three State Open team winners, 12 class champions,
eight runner-ups and seven third-place finishes. He was inducted into the
Connecticut Coaches Hall of Fame last year.
All of which — along with his 400th victory — he shrugs off.
“My kids have gotten me every honor a coach can get,” Sharples said. “I'm
really not that interested in making a big deal about that.”
What he wanted to make a big deal about was the fact that his runners —
Ryan Gauthier, T.J. Dyer and Tim Benway — took first, third and fourth
against each team the Saints ran against Wednesday.
The St. Bernard girls, now also coached by Sharples, also beat Plainfield
(20-36) and Tourtellotte (15-50) in an Eastern Connecticut Conference
Small Division meet behind the 1-2 finish of Emily Bouty and Dana
Williams.
Gauthier was the top overall boys' finisher in 15 minutes, 35 seconds
Tourtellotte's Chad Tatsey was second (15:55), followed by Plainfield's
Charlie Hansen (16:32) and St. Thomas More's Jordan Way (17:45).
Dyer and Benway finished with a second of each other (17:55 and 17:56).
Tourtellotte beat Plainfield, 28-29.
Bouty's winning time of 16:53 was 37 seconds faster than teammate Williams
(17:30). Williams, in turn, was 48 seconds faster than Plainfield's Nicole
Ruffo (18:18). Also for St. Bernard, Talia Pettini was fourth in 18:23,
Rebecca Coen was sixth in 19;34 and Erin McCafferey was seventh in 19:41.
Plainfield's Sarah Langlois was fifth in 19:03 as the Panthers beat
Tourtellotte, 15-50.
