Owen and McGovern Race at Nationals
There was quite a difference in the race
conditions between the Northeast Regionals in New York in
November and the National Finals in Orlando as Meghan Owen
(Killingly High School) and Brian McGovern (Fairfield
Prep) competed in the season-ending Foot Locker Cross
Country Championship. Two of Connecticut's best toed the
starting line with 31 other national finalists in uncomfortably
warm and sunny mid-70s conditions at the Oak Trails golf 5km
(3.1mi) course in Orlando. Meghan Owen ran 18:43 for a 30th
place while Brian McGovern finished in 15:31 for 17th place. The
winners were Sara Bei of Montgomery, CA (16:55) and Dathan
Ritzenhein of Rockford, MI (14:35).

Connecticut Places 5 Runners in Top 10!
In the New England Girl's Cross Country
Championship at Thetford Academy in Thetford Vermont, individual
winner, Meghan Owen of Killingly High School, bettered
her 2nd place of a year ago with a time of 19:09 for the 3.1mile
(5km) course. Four more Connecticut runners then placed in the
top 10 with (2)-Lisa Stublic of Crosby HS (19:25), (3)-Melanie
Schorr-Suffield HS (19:30), (4)-Amy Hicks-Woodstock Acad
(19:33), (6)-Frances Russell -EO Smith, (19:37) and (9)-Niamh
Cunningham-Branford HS, (19:50).
The Connecticut teams ran well with 3 teams; 4th-EO
Smith (177pts), 5th-Fitch (194pts), 8th-Joel
Barlow (251pts) in the top 10 behind New England Team
Champion Concord High School (108pts). The remaining Connecticut
teams were; 13-Guilford (326pts), 15-Norwich Free
Academy (334pts) and 17-Simsbury (385pts).

McGovern Repeats as NE Champion!
In the second contest of the day, the New
England Boy's Cross Country Championship individual winner was
again Brian McGovern of Fairfield Prep High School with a
time of 16:07 for the 3.1mile (5km) course. McGovern was
followed by 3 other Connecticut runners in the top 10 including:
(3)-Steve Muchetti-Ridgefield HS, (16:390, (5)-Lucas
Meyer-Ridgefield HS,(16:46), (7)-Ramon LaBoy-Danbury HS,(16:56).
Danbury New Team Champion!
The New England Team Champion, Danbury High
School (92 points), took advantage and ran to victory over
the 24-team field. Also placing in the top 10 were 6-Ridgefield
(212pts) and 10-Xavier (265pts). The remaining
Connecticut teams were: 14-Manchester (356), 16-Griswold
(372) and 19-Simsbury (405).

The first race of the day was the CIAC Girls
State Open race at Wickham Park in East Hartford and the
competitors ran under ideal conditions for a November day. In
tightly contested events, the new State Open Champion was Meghan
Owen of Killingly (time of 15:04), and the new State Open
Team Champion was Fitch High School (82 points). The
State Open Runnerup was Chelsea Lenge of Conard (time of
15:08) and the State Open Team Runnerup was E.O.Smith
with 119 points..

The second race of the day held at Wickham
Park in East Hartford was the CIAC Boys State Open. Ideal
conditions also existed for the boys race as both the new State
Open Champion, Brian McGovern of Fairfield Prep (meet
record time of 15:33), and the State Open Team Champion, Danbury
High School (76 points), took advantage and ran to
victories. The State Open Runnerup was -Steve Mucchetti of
Ridgefield (15:41) and the State Open Team Runnerup was Ridgefield
(146 points).
