Niahm Cunningham Captures Title
Guilford Wins Team Title

In her first season of cross country, the Branford junior is already the area’s top runner.Thursday at Hammonasset State Park, Cunningham won the Southern Connecticut Conference girls’ championship in 19 minutes, 33.83 seconds over a 3.1-mile course.
Guilford, led by freshman Heather Stanish, did win the team title with 47 points, followed by Mercy of Middletown (68), Amity of Woodbridge (78) and Hand of Madison (116). Guilford dominated, taking three of the top five spots and placing five runners in the top 20. Teah Muller was third, twin sister Brenna Muller sixth, Becca Lufler 16th and Claire Hamilton 20th for the Indians, who won their third SCC title in the last four years.

Brian McGovern Wins Easily
Xavier Repeats as Team Champ

Xavier of Middletown repeated as boys’ champion with 43 points. Amity (89) was second, Fairfield Prep (92), behind boys’ individual champion Brian McGovern, third and Notre Dame of West Haven (128) fourth. McGovern, the Fairfield Prep senior All-American blew away a strong field in the final 2 miles, finishing in 16:01, 50 seconds ahead of Guilford’s Alex Bloom. Amity’s Carl Desir was third (16:59), Xavier’s Dan Pugliese fourth (17:00) and Derby’s Jeff Roginielewicz fifth (17:01). In winning the team title, Xavier had four runners in the top nine with Sean Flynn seventh, Owen McKenna eighth and Jason Wilson ninth.
