The Newington boys and Bristol Central girls, respectively
led by individual race champions Jeff Karnilowicz and Jill Sullivan,
captured CCC South Cross Country Meet championship for the first-time ever
Thursday afternoon at Stanley Quarter Park.
Newington placed all five of its runners among the top nine finishers in a
52-runner field while Central placed five individuals among the top 17 in
a 40-runner field.
BOYS RACE
Jeff Karnilowicz was joined by teammates Dan Procko and Perry Salonia and
Bristol Central’s Jon Godbout in a front-running group for the final two
miles. Karnilowicz pulled away from Procko in the final stretch to win
with a time of 17:15.27. Procko was next at 17:27.69, Godbout placed third
in 17:35.27 and Salonia finished fourth in 17:45.37. New Britain’s
Joshua Williams rounded out the top five with a time of 17:48.84.
GIRLS RACE
Sullivan and defending CCC South champ Sarah Patsos of Maloney were running
side-by-side for two miles before the race was decided on the course’s
lone hill that leads into a wooded area. Sullivan’s winning time of 20:16.51
was 30 second better than Patsos (20:46.47). Newington’s Yolande Thornton
finished third in 21:13.44 and Central’s Nicole Nolting placed fourth in 21:34.85.
