Boys Race

Williams Leads Thomaston to Title

The Golden Bears capped a dominant dual-meet season with a runaway triumph at the BL Cross Country Championships at Black Rock State Park as a trio of Golden Bears, Alan Williams, Greg Kalinka (16:39) and Nick Rice (17:01), sprinted across the finish line first, second and third respectively to lead Thomaston to its first league title in 27 years. Williams, who was second in last year's race to Shepaug's Jamie Hoffman, won the title with a time of 16 minutes, 29 seconds over the 3.1 mile course, which ties the course record set by Hoffman in '99.

Girls Race

Burns Paces Nonnewaug to Fourth Straight

On the girls side, it was just too many Chiefs as the Nonnewaug girls won their fourth straight BL crown, putting five runners on the Berkshire League all-star team on the strength of their top 10 finishes, while also placing all seven runners within the first 15 finishers. The BL girls title was going to come down to a match race between Nonnewaug teammates, junior Mary-Alex Zickefoose and freshman Heather Burns. Zickefoose, the defending BL champ wasn't going to give up her throne without a fight, but on this day at least, Burns was the faster runner. Burns covered the 2.4-mile course in 15:23, with Zickefoose second in 16:02. Nonnewaug is 40-0 in BL meets over the last four years, and the Chiefs have won 51 straight meets. Coach Arleigh Duff said that tradition has been a key motivating factor.
