STRATFORD — Before she ever squeezed a fiberglass pole Monday, Brookfield High’s Leah Williams vowed to raise the bar.
This was her senior year, after all, her last stab at the South-West Conference Girls Track and Field Championships.
When the last run was logged at Bunnell High, Williams didn’t just raise the bar. She raised it a full two feet over everyone else to win the pole vault. Williams cleared 10 feet, matching her personal best, to add 10 points to Brookfield’s ledger.
Still, it wasn’t nearly enough to catch Masuk, which won the SWC crown with 94 points. Bunnell was second with 85½ points and Weston was third with 56.
Joel Barlow was the top local finisher. The Falcons scored 45½ points to take fifth place, followed by Bethel in sixth with 43, New Milford in seventh with 41, Newtown in ninth with 32, New Fairfield in 10th with 28, Pomperaug in 11th with 26 and Brookfield in 12th with 21.
“I didn’t expect to go that high because as soon as the sun went behind the trees, it got really cold,” said Williams, who will take her pole vaulting prowess to UConn next season. “But I was really determined to have fun and I think that helped me relax. I didn’t feel a lot of pressure or anything today.”
Three other local girls won gold medals: Newtown’s Whitney Blanchard won the discus with a personal best of 118-8, Pomperaug’s Allison Bradshaw won the shot put in 37-10 and Bethel’s Kate Whitlock won the 300 intermediate hurdles in 47.55 seconds.
The New Fairfield High 4x400 relay team also had the Midas touch. The Rebels won the final event in 4:14.98, nearly a full second ahead of runner-up Weston.
It was that kind of day for Blanchard, too.
“I was kind of surprised I got into the finals because discus hasn’t been my strongest event lately,” said Blanchard, who also placed fourth in the shot put (31-2¼) and fifth in the javelin (95-9). “But it felt good as soon as I threw it. Everything is about timing and mechanics. Today it just felt right.”
After five events, Masuk was first with 30 points, Joel Barlow was hanging tough in second with 27 points and Bunnell was third with 26.
After 10 events, Masuk was still first with 44 points, followed by Joel Barlow in second with 39 points, and Bunnell and Jonathan Law tied for third with 38 points.
By the time the 4x400 relay arrived, it was a two-team race between Masuk with 90 points and Bunnell with 84½ points. No one else was even close.
Unnerved, Masuk finished fourth in the 4x400 relay in 4:19.92, good enough to win the meet. Bunnell, meanwhile, came in sixth in 4:25.93.
In addition to winning the 300 hurdles, Whitlock was part of Bethel’s 4x400 relay team that finished fifth in 4:20.67.
“After my first race today, I felt pretty good. It gave me a chance to relax a little bit,” said Whitlock, who opened the meet with a second-place finish in the 100 high hurdles in 16.75. “I’ve never run so hard in all my life. I get really nervous before meets, but today was worth it.”
Jonathan Law’s Lauren Miller was the meet’s only triple-winner. Miller won the 100 meters in 13.16, the long jump in 17-2½ and the high jump in 5-4.
Bunnell’s Jenn Albrecht and Masuk’s Katie Duffy were double-winners. Albrecht won the javelin in 108-3 and the 200 in 27.24, while Duffy won the 800 in 2:26.31 and the 3200 in 11:55.88.
