BROOKFIELD — Some things in life, like tax refunds and first kisses, are worth the wait.
On Tuesday, Bethel High added a South-West Conference Boys Track and Field Championship to that list.
The Wildcats won the SWC title with 101 points, but not before surviving a 25-minute protest in the discus. When the smoke finally cleared at Brookfield High, Foran’s Jeff Cash was disqualified and Bethel was crowned SWC champion.
New Milford finished second with 94 points. Pomperaug, which entered the meet 14-0, finished a distant third with 63 points.
“We knew this was setting up to be a competitive meet. There were too many good teams here with too many good athletes,” said Yvonne Grimes, Bethel’s fourth-year coach. “For us to win, everybody had to step up and do their best. We’re not very deep, so every person in every event was important to us.”
Bethel’s Ronnie Lienhardt and Bunnell’s Vladimir Foster were the meet’s only individual double-winners.
Foster won the triple jump at 43-10½ and the high jump at 6-2. Lienhardt, a senior, won the 100 in 11.23 and the 200 in 22.76, a personal record. He also finished fourth in the 400 in 52.28.
“This is only my second year running track, so it’s definitely satisfying. Last year, I was hurt for the SWCs, so I was really looking forward to this,” said Lienhardt, who will compete in football and track next year at Marist College.
“We all worked really hard this season, so we were pretty confident coming into the meet. We felt we could win if everything came together for us.”
After 10 events, New Milford and Bethel were tied for first with 51 points, while Pomperaug was third with 33.
After 15 events, Bethel had a 12-point lead over New Milford, but the Green Wave was counting on points in the shot put, discus and triple jump, the last three events to be scored.
Nick Morrill, who won the javelin earlier in the meet, added 10 more points with a third-place finish in the shot put and a fourth-place finish in the discus.
But it still wasn’t enough to catch Bethel.
“Winning this means so much to me. I’m so proud of these kids,” Grimes said. “The seniors and I have been together for four years. Their freshmen year, we were 4-8-1. We’ve come a long way and it feels great.”
One of the most dramatic finishes came in the 110 hurdles. Newtown’s Peter Terrance won the event in 15.51 seconds, one-hundredth of a second faster than top-seeded Mike Hamill of Joel Barlow.
But Terrance’s joy was short-lived.
After leading down the stretch of the 300 hurdles, Terrance appeared to break his arm when he crashed over the final hurdle. Somehow, Terrance managed to get up and will himself across the finish line 17th in 50.69.
Terrance was later carried off the field on a stretcher and taken to Danbury Hospital for X-rays.
Hamill, who lost for the first time this year in the 110 hurdles, won the 300 hurdles after Terrance fell.
“Obviously, you never want to see anybody get hurt,” Hamill said. “I’m happy that I won, especially after losing in the 110s, but I hope (Terrance) is OK. “
Terrance’s condition was not immediately available Tuesday night.
