ECC Results

Groton — There were so many personal bests Tuesday, Fitch High School girls' track and field coach Shawn Towne didn't know where to start.

The result, though, was clear: Fitch upset East Lyme, 82-68, to create a three-team share of the Eastern Connecticut Conference Large Division title between the Falcons, Vikings and Norwich Free Academy. All three finished 4-1 in the division.

"The kids really rose to the occasion," said Towne, whose team had lost by six points earlier in the year to NFA, which in turn, was beaten by East Lyme.

How did they do it?

East Lyme's Heather Stevenson set a school record in the 1,600 in 5 minutes, 19.0 seconds — breaking the record time of 5:19.9 Dorothy Bienhoff ran in 1998. But Fitch's Betsy Boucher ran down Stevenson on the straightaway to get the victory in 5:17.3. Boucher also won the 3,200.

The Falcons' 4x400 relay team hadn't broken 4:20 this season and Towne was worried after East Lyme posted a 4:17 Saturday. Fitch's relay team of Keshelle Paul, Emily Watson, Patti Murphy and Portia Delain ran 4:10.3 to edge the Vikings by 3.2 seconds.

Paul, who ran the anchor leg on the 4x400 team, also ran the anchor leg on the winning 4x100 team that consisted of Murphy, Delain and Ashley Lowe. They beat East Lyme 50.8 to 51.4.

And then Paul won the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles.

Fitch's Sarah Latham had personal bests in two events, winning the javelin and placing second in the high jump. The Falcons went 1-2 in the high jump with Tilly Roccon taking first.

Jenna Christie and Lowe went 1-2, respectively, in the long jump for the Falcons.

"Shawn has an excellent team," said East Lyme coach Carl Reichard. "His kids have been putting up better and better results over the past couple weeks and his kids competed well today.

"Our kids did well today too, but (Fitch) just did a little better."

Lauren Roland placed first in the discus and second in the shot put to teammate Allison Griggs. Josephine Vincent won the triple jump for the Vikings and Kailly Thull took the pole vault. O'Connell ran on the winning 4x800 team with Chelsea Hargis, Jen Cody and Katie Leahy.
