Vikings hit their mark - Dominate Wildcats in ECC Large showdown
By Bill Tavares - Published on 05/01/2002
East Lyme — As he watched East Lyme junior Heather Stevenson hold off teammate Laura Wang to win the 800 meters Tuesday, Norwich Free Academy girls' track coach Gary Makowicki made a glum prediction.
“They're going to beat us pretty good the way this is going,” he said.
Unfortunately for the Wildcats, Makowicki was right. Seizing control from the outset, East Lyme turned this widely-anticipated Eastern Connecticut Conference Large Division showdown into a mismatch, rolling to a 92-58 victory over NFA (9-1, 2-1).
“I thought it was going to be really close,” said Stevenson, who also won the 1,600 for the Vikings while anchoring the winning 4x400 relay team. “We are a very young team, so it's awesome that we're doing this well. ... It definitely gives us confidence.”
East Lyme (4-0, 3-0) ended NFA's 83-meet unbeaten streak two seasons ago, pulling out a 73-68 victory by capturing the final event of the day. The Vikings repeated that feat last season, edging the Wildcats again with a win in the final event.
This year, however, there was no such suspense. In what was basically a concession to reality midway through the meet, Makowicki held talented sophomore Mallory Keegan out of the 3,200, rightly figuring there was no reason make her run two distance events when the outcome was obvious.
“It broke my heart not to be able to run the 3,200,” said Keegan, who was second in the 1,600 to Stevenson. “I was just watching, wishing I could get points for my team. That's never happened to me. He's never said, 'Don't run the race because we don't have a shot.' NFA always has a shot.”
Not Tuesday.
The Vikings won all three relays, swept the 100 and the 3,200, and placed two of the top three in eight other events. Aside from Stevenson, Allison Griggs won the discus and shot, setting a school record in the latter event with a throw of 39 feet, 11/2 inches. And Jenna Nechamen captured the long jump, 100 and 200 while also anchoring the victorious 4x100 relay team.
“I thought we would get out to a fast start, and then it was going to be a question of how we held on in the field events,” East Lyme coach Carl Reichard said. “We were looking for some good results in the long jump and pole vault. Both of those are events where you can have a good day or an awful day, and we did very well in those events. Our kids came up with some very strong performances. That helped us break up (NFA's) field events right away.”
Kailly Thull won the pole vault with a school-record 7 feet, 6 inches for the Vikings while Wang finished third. In the long jump, meanwhile, Nechamen edged NFA's Ginger Bynum with a leap of 15-7 while East Lyme's Josephine Vincent was third.
The performance in the long jump was part of an outstanding day for Nechamen, a senior who, because of her dedication to figure skating, did not begin competing in interscholastic sports at East Lyme until joining the indoor track team this past winter.
“It's really exciting because we were told we needed to step up today, and I'm really happy that we did that,” Nechamen said. “It was a really important meet to us.”
By his most optimistic projection, Makowicki had come up with a longshot formula that would have resulted in a 75-75 tie. Tuesday's meet demonstrated what kind of gap the Wildcats must close before the ECC Championship meet.
“Coming in here, I thought we were just about even,” said Bynum, who set a personal best in the triple jump with a mark of 34-1. “I thought it was going to be a really close meet. I didn't think the outcome would be this. They did a great job.”
