Danbury runs to title
Egbert, Dunbar win double gold to lead Hatters

WILTON — Remember the millennium celebration two years ago?

Well, it may be that long before any school but Danbury High wins another FCIAC girls track and field championship.

Tuesday, the Hatters put on an awesome display of running, jumping and throwing talent to dominate the 14-school field.

Danbury won with 176.5 points, followed by New Canaan in second with 115 points. Every other school in the meet scored 45 points or less.

“This is the first time Danbury has won the FCIAC championship in my tenure,” Danbury coach Kevin Wilcox said. “I’ve been told we won one championship in the 1980’s, but I’ve never seen a record of it in print.”

Danbury scored in every event except the 100 and 200-meter dashes.

The Hatters scored 34 points in the first three events with three firsts and a fourth. Halfway through the meet, former Danbury boys’ coach Marty Ogden, the meet announcer, told the crowd the score was Danbury 84, New Canaan 35.

The Hatters won nine of the 16 events. Even when they didn’t lead the pack, they finished second four times, third three times, fourth five times, fifth three times and sixth once.

Stacey Egbert and Whitney Dunbar were double-winners. Egbert won gold medals in the long jump (17-6) and the javelin (108-9), while Dunbar captured the 800 and 1,600 in 2:24.93 and 5:13.78, respectively.

Other Danbury winners included Heather Bourgault in the 400-meter dash in 57.92, Chrissy Weaver in the pole vault at 8-6, Marsha Locke in the discus in 35-6, the 4x100 relay team in 49.98 and the 4x800 relay team in 9:54.36.

“Winning the 4x100 was a real plus for us,” Wilcox said. “I hadn’t figured us to win that run.”

Weaver’s tenacity and effort in the pole vault — the first time the event has ever been contested in the FCIAC meet — verged on the heroic.

With dozens of entries in the vault, Weaver waited on the sidelines until the competition thinned out and the crossbar was raised to 7-6.

Then, she raised the heat on the remaining six girls until it was just her and Annie Haydon of New Canaan.

Both girls faulted at 8-6, which set up a jump-off. But Weaver won on the first jump to end the drama in short fashion.

“There’s no question in my mind that if pole vault had been offered in my sophomore year, I would be jumping 11-feet and maybe have earned an athletic scholarship,” Weaver said. “I’ve been coached by Danny Glaser here at Danbury and by Scott Williams in Brookfield. I even jump with Leah Williams in practice. (Williams jumped 10 feet in the SWC championships on Monday.) I’ve did well with just one year of experience.”

Weaver will enter Western Connecticut and play soccer for the Colonials next year. But she will continue to practice pole vaulting.

Although WestConn does not have a track and field team, Weaver says she has not reached the end of her pole-vaulting career.

Dunbar employed the same strategy in both of her victories. She was content with following on the inside shoulder of the early leader, and then, busting past her into first about 300 meters from the finish line.

From there out it was try to stay close to me if you can.

Liz Calle of Danbury, who had been in fourth place early in the 800, moved up to take second in the 1,600, while, Lauren Dellavolpe, who anchored the winning 4x800 team, took third in the 800.

“I ran both races a couple of weeks ago and learned what I could do from those efforts,” Dunbar said. “I knew I didn’t want to run in the lead too early. As we came out of the second turn I was feeling comfortable and made my move.”

Dunbar, who began her athletic career at Danbury as a field hockey player, will be off to James Madison University in the fall. She was recruited and expects to compete for JMU.

Ridgefield, meanwhile, started slowly in the meet, but finished sixth with 26 points.

Kristen Sederhold won the 300-meter hurdles in 46.82, 57-hundredths of a second faster than Julie McLane of New Canaan.

Nicole Breves also ran strong. She took fifth in both the 1,600 and 3,200-meter runs. The two girls accounted for more than half of Ridgefield’s points.
