Waterford Jessica Haywood and Jen Latkowski finished second and third respectively in the high jump to clinch Waterford High School's 71-70 victory over Montville Tuesday in a showdown of two of the top track teams in the Eastern Connecticut Conference Medium Division.

Plainfield's tough, but I think this is a big one, Waterford coach Jan Merrill-Morin said. This may determine it. ... This is one of the most exciting dual meets we've had in the last five years.

With just the high jump and 4x800 remaining, Merrill-Morin conceded Montville's Erin Leduc was going to win the high jump and the Indians were a lock to win the relay.

Either we got two and three (in the high jump) or we lose the meet, Merrill-Morin said.

Merrill-Morin had seen Latkowski play basketball, and encouraged her to try the high jump.

Latkowski, a junior, cleared 4 feet, 6 inches on her first attempt to clinch third and the win for the Lancers.

Haywood also took first in the 100, while Libby Gregg edged Leduc in the 100 hurdles. Leduc, who also took first in the triple jump for Montville, beat out Gregg to win the 300 hurdles.

Led by Alexander East, the Lancers swept the javelin. Rachel DiSaia gave them wins in the shot put and discus, while Carrie Ritter took the 1,600 and 3,200 and finished second in the 800 to Montville's Teela Kopp. Katie Drew ran four events for Waterford, taking second in the 100, 200 and 400, in addition to running on the winning 4x100 relay team with Jessica Haywood, Meghan Vandenbosch and Annie Egan. Egan, the daughter of Montville boys' coach Tim Egan, was second in the long jump and triple jump for Waterford.

Montville won the 4x400 and 4x800 relays. Christina Lacanfora won the 200 and 400, and Kim Myshka took the long jump for the Indians. Chesney McComber was second in the 1,600 and 3,200, and Amy Clark was second in the shot put and discus.
