East Lyme girls sweep relays on way to stopping Ledyard

East Lyme — East Lyme High School opened defense of its Eastern Connecticut Conference Large Division girls' track and field championship with a convincing 88-53 victory over Ledyard Tuesday.

“It was a good meet with a lot of strategy involved on both sides, which is always fun,” said East Lyme coach Carl Reichard. “I was surprised by our 4x800 (relay) team and all our middle distance kids ran well. That was a little bit of a surprise to me, so I'm sure it was a surprise to (Ledyard coach) Dave (Tetlow), too.”

Sophomore Heather Stevenson won the 800 (2:30.3), 1600 (5:29.5) and joined Amy Mrowka, Erin O'Connell and Laura Wang to anchor the winning 4x800 relay (10:28.9).

East Lyme swept the relays, capturing the 4x100 (51.5) and 4x400 (4:33.9) as well. O'Connell, Mrowka and Wang were also on the 4x400 team with Melinda Ducheneaux.

Amy Wisehart added a pair of wins for the Vikings — the high jump (5 feet, 2 inches) and the triple jump (33-8½).

For Ledyard, Jenny Worth captured the 110 hurdles (17.0 seconds) and 300 hurdles (48.2) and Lacey-Ann Parker won the shot put (36-4) and javelin (97-1).

In other girls' meets:


Andrea Chappelle won the 100-meter hurdles (16.2), the long jump (16-9) and the triple jump (35-11 1/2) to lift Norwich Free Academy to an 89-43 victory over Woodstock Academy. Christa Parent took the 200 and 400 and Maria Vazquez won the discus and finished second in the shot put and javlelin for the Wildcats (4-0). Woodstock won a pair of relays, with Julie Larsen, Amy Hicks, Kim Shields and Kyle MacQueen in the 4x400 and MacQueen, Hicks, Shields and Christie Garrity in the 4x800. Hicks added a win in the 1,600 in 5:35.2 and MacQueen took the 800 in 2:29.4.

Erin Leduc won the 110 hurdles (18.3), 300 hurdles (56.3) and high jump (4-6) to lead Montville to a 113-23 ECC Small Division win over Stonington. Kim Myshka (long and triple jump) and Chris McComber (1600 and 3200) added two wins apiece for the Indians (1-1), while Brittany Solar (800), Kaitlin Gomes (200) and Meredith Bogue (discus) were victorious for Stonington (0-3).

Casey Rondeau and Patti Robbins won two events apiece as Putnam defeated Marianapolis, 69-51. Rondeau won the 800 and the 1,600, while Robbins won the long jump and javelin. Andrea Carnahan (100), Eve Foldan (3,200) and Joy Shepard (shot put) also won events for Putnam. Elise O'Brien won the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles for Marianapolis.

Libby Gregg won the 100 hurdles in 17.7 seconds, the 300 hurdles in 56.2, and the long jump in 13-9½ for Waterford in a 65-42 win over New London. Carrie Ritter won the 800 in 2:36.3, and the 1,600 in 5:42 for the Lancers (1-1, 1-0). Jen Strong won the 400-meter in 64.8 seconds, the 200 in 27.5, and the 100 in 13.1 for the Whalers, who also lost to Plainfield, 88-42. 

Ashley Lowe won the 100 hurdles in 18.6 seconds, the 300 hurdles in 52.8, the long jump in 14-6, and triple jump for Fitch in a 105-33 ECC Large win over Killingly. Jen Latham won the shot put and discus for the Falcons (2-0, 1-0). Dafney Derosier won the 100 in 12.7 and the 200 in 27.0 for the Redgals. 

Abbey Sadowski won the 800 in 2:55.50, 1,600 in 6:38.46 and the 3,200 in 13:21.27 for Griswold in an 88-53 ECC Small win over Bacon Academy. Kristin Rollins won the 100 in 13.33 for the Wolverines and they placed first in all three throwing events. Kristin Nikodemski won the 400 in 65.05 and the high jump at 4-8 for the Bobcats (2-4, 0-1).

Jen Trama took first in the 800 (2:44) and long jump (14-5) while also joining Alyssa Monaco, Alison Laventure and Erin Faucher on the winning 4x100 (54.9) and 4x400 (4:31) relay teams in Tourtellotte's 86-48 win over St. Bernard in a Small Division meet. The Tigers are 3-3, 1-0. Laura Leitkowski was first in the 100 hurdles for the Saints (0-1, 0-1).
