It’s a great night for the Egans
Coach (Montville), daughter (Waterford) come home winners

New London — They had driven home together the previous night from Fordham University.

Annie Egan, a senior member of the Waterford High School girls' indoor track team — also in the midst of auditioning for collegiate theater programs — and Tim Egan, her dad and the boys' and girls' indoor track coach at Montville, had to battle the traffic coming out of New York City.

They got to sleep in a bit Saturday morning before their respective teams competed in the afternoon at the Eastern Connecticut Conference Small Division Championship at the Coast Guard Academy.

And then they both went home to celebrate when the Waterford girls and Montville boys were crowned champions.

“It was a good night for us,” Tim Egan said.

Tim's team won the boys' title on the final event, when it needed one place-winner in the long jump to edge Griswold. The Indians got a first-place finish from Jerry Sparkman, a second from Johnny Posey and a sixth from Josh Rivera.

They had pulled within two by winning the final two relays of the meet, sending Tim Egan pacing.

Montville won with 125 points, followed by Griswold with 108 points and Bacon Academy with 78.

Meanwhile, Annie and her Waterford teammates had already completed their victory lap, having edged Griswold, 108-101. It was the second Small Division title in three years for both the Waterford girls and Montville boys.

“It was like doing a puzzle all week in my head,” said Waterford coach Jan Merrill-Morin. “We've been talking about this from Day One this season and I've been talking to my husband about it every night this week.

“This team just had a lot of spirit. We had seniors, freshmen, it was really a team effort.”

Merrill-Morin said the regular-season tri-meets the school hosted for the first time this year helped the Lancers build the “team” concept. She also credited senior Carrie Ritter for helping her put the pieces of the puzzle together, figuring out which runners to place in which events.

“She's smart,” Merrill-Morin said with a laugh.

Ritter, who is in fact valedictorian of her senior class, is also apparently quite fast.

She won the 3,200 meters in 12 minutes, 55.80 seconds and also finished second to Griswold's Abbey Sadowski in both the 1,000 and 1,600. In the 3,200, Ritter teamed with her sister Bess, a freshman, for a one-two finish and 18 points for the Lancers.

“Sometimes I get fed up with her,” Ritter said of her younger sister. “But this is something that's so wonderful we did together.”

Waterford finished the day with a fourth-place finish in the 3x360 relay, in which Griswold didn't have a team, and was second to Griswold in the 4x180 relay. Annie Egan, who ran on the second-place relay team that clinched the meet, was also second in the long jump and sixth in the 300.

Griswold's Sadowski (300, 1,000, 1,600) and Bacon Academy's Stacey Chmielecki (55 hurdles, long jump, high jump) won three events each.

For the Montville boys, it was the notion of last year's second-place finish to Griswold that kept them hungry going into this year's meet. Sparkman, jumping in the shadow of Bacon Academy All-American Josh Fournier last year, won the long jump, high jump and ran a leg of the Indians' winning 4x360 relay.

He was joined on the 4x360 team by Chris Ouellette, Ray Schultz and Cliff Bourne, finishing first in 3:16.75.

The Indians' 4x180 team of Andy King, Posey, Justin Cabral and Rivera then won in 1:28.99 to put the meet in the hands of the long jumpers.

“All day long it was like, 'I think we're going to be OK at the end because we have two very good relay teams,” Tim Egan said. “I think the kids were disappointed last year. We came in thinking we were the best men's team and were pretty stunned.”

Montville's other victory came from Bourne in the 55 hurdles.

Griswold's Brian Laguerre helped keep his team in the race all day, winning the 300, 600 and running a leg of the Wolverines' winning 4x720 team. Also on that team were Gavin Coombs, Noah White and Mike Charron. Coombs added a win in the 3,200 and teammate Billy Preston took the 1,000.
