Cabral and Shields Added to New GPY
Listing in Hall of Fame... As stated at their website, Gatorade Player of the Year , "The Gatorade State Players of the Year are selected not only for their outstanding athletic excellence, but for their academic achievement and exceptional character. The selection process is administered by RISE Magazine, the nation's leading sports and lifestyle magazine for teens. Featuring an editorial staff of prep sports writers from across the nation, RISE has comprehensively covered the world of high school sports for more than a decade and its 25 regionalized editions are currently distributed in more than 6,500 high schools nationwide. In narrowing and evaluating the list of candidates for Gatorade State Player of the Year honors, RISE works with top sport-specific experts and a media advisory board of accomplished, veteran prep sports journalists." Donn Cabral of Glastonbury High School and Anna Shields of Lewis Mills High School are the latest recipients of the Gatorade Player of the Year for Connecticut Outdoor Track and Field. Both distance runners join an elite group of athletes from Connecticut who have received the award since 1985 including last year's winners Shaniqua Burgess and Terrell Wilks of Hillhouse High School. During his senior career as a Glastonbury High School distance runner, Donn Cabral set the current State Outdoor records in both the 5000m (14:32.60) and the 2-Mile Run (8:56.35) as well as the State Indoor 5000m record (14:44.16). Cabral also won the 2007 Gatorade State Player of the Year for Cross Country for his winning performances at the State Open, New England and Footlocker Regional Championships as well as his eighth place finish at the Footlocker National Competition. Cabral's final competition as a Connecticut high school athlete comes on July 9th as he represents the state and nation at the 2008 IAAF World Junior Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland competing in the 10,000m run. As a junior distance runner for Lewis Mills High School this past season, Anna Shields had recorded some of the fastest times in the past several years as well as being the current record holder for the State Outdoor 1-Mile Run at 4:48.52 as well as the State Open Champion in both the 1600m and 3200m Runs. Shields set a new State Open record in the 1600m Run with a 4:55.22 effort. Earlier this year, Shields ran to the Nike Indoor National Championship title in the 5000m with a time of 17:38.57 to win by over ten seconds. With a 1600m split of 5:28 and a 3200m split of 10:59, Shields established a sizeable lead to establish the third fastest meet time for the event that was first run in 2007. Shields will enter her senior year as one of the state's best harriers for the 2008 cross country season.
