Weaver Women's Team Repeats - Sullivan Clears New Height at CIAC State Open Meet
(June 6, 2007 - 10:30pm - Ron Knapp)
While the Weaver-Hartford Women's Team was sprinting towards a second consecutive CIAC State Open Championship on Wednesday, June 6th at Willowbrook Park in New Britain, senior Jessica Sullivan of Norwich Free Academy was busy clearing a new state and meet record height of 11 feet and 6 inches in the Pole Vault. The Weaver team scored 67 points to defeat runner-up New Britain with 40 points and Class L Champion East Lyme with 31 points.

The Weaver team repeat capture of the Open title was accomplished with wins in the 400m dash by Shaena Gray in 56.69, the 300m Hurdles by Clervine Sanon (45.29) and their 4x100m Relay (48.20). Weaver gained 16 points with two second place efforts, Catherine Milledge in the 300m hurdles and their 4x400m relay behind winner Manchester (3:56.87). Important points came from third place efforts in the 200m by Christine Jones as she trailed Shaniqua Burgess of Hillhouse across the line (25.11) and in the 100m Hurdles as Sanon finished behind winner Lauren Tanz of Brookfield (14.35) and Ann Marie Clark of Hillhouse (14.37). Weaver's other points came when Milledge and Jones finished 4-5 in the 100m Dash behind winner Shelby Walton of Danbury (11.96).

More meet highlights came right from the start of the meet as the Conard-West Hartford 4x800m relay quartet of Caitlin Cannon, Sophia Harrington, Molly Fresher and Emma Perron jumped to a large lead and never looked back as they won in a meet record time of 9:15.98 that eclipsed the former record of 9:17.93 set by Ridgefield in 2005. The only other meet record came in the Pole Vault as Jessica Sullivan of NFA cleared 11'6" on her first attempt after breaking the old meet record of 11'0.25" when she cleared 11'3" on her first attempt as well. Sullivan now holds both the Indoor and Outdoor State and State Open meet records, all at 11'6".

The only double event winner of the day was Cherelle Allen as she led New Britain to the runner-up place when she won both the Long Jump (18'7") and the Triple Jump (38'0.5"). Allen had help from teammates Athalia Smith and Chantual Smith who finished 2-3 in the Shot Put behind winner Candace Williams of Notre Dame (41'5.5").

More impressive performances came as several athletes bettered or came close to their own personal records. On the track, sophomore Anna Shields of Lewis Mills challenged the older 1600m runners with a first 800m of 2:26 and then held on to win the 1600m run in 5:03.14. Senior Jamie Olson of Glastonbury charged to the lead in the final lap of the 800m run to win in 2:13.87 while sophomore Erica Hines of Enrico Fermi took charge on the last lap of the 3200m run to win going away from the field in 10:54.45; Stacey Marion of Simsbury was the only other finisher under the 11-minute mark in 10:59.78. In the remaining field events, State Open Champions included sophomore Allison Barwise of Amity in the High Jump (5'4"), Sharmaine Gregor of East Lyme in the Discus Throw (125'11") and Fontini Xenidis of Shelton in the Javelin Throw (137'7").
